I have never heard of a different board than the makerbase klipad being used in that device.
Was that really sold by Sovol as their "KlipperScreen"?

EBay from sovol-official https://ebay.us/m/JRlwlX might have been early run stock but they used some different form of SBC on here and likely others have it too.

Kernel partition is 20M and appears to be occupied by only 11.5M of kernel if memory is serving me atm. Absolutely zero kernel modules in the ARMbian root beyond the wifi.

Need anymore details to take an educated guess at build I can provide if only for the wtf is this thing factor

I guess, its OS is based on outdated debian buster as well?

In case you want to try it with mainline klipper on a recent armbian build (and you can flash it somehow), then you can try using an image for the mks-klipad50 and replace its "rk3328-mksklipad50.dtb" with a (renamed) copy of your "sovol.dtb".
With some luck it might run after that replacement.
(But of course only try that, if it uses a replaceable storage, like emmc.)

Do you have a photo of that board?
Would be nice to at least mention it for completeness on this page.

I'd like to get involved with this but for a different reason. I have a Sovol SV06 Ace that also suffers from Sovol GPL neglect.
The Sovol Ace mainboard uses an rk3308 b and the emmc is soldered in. The emmc can be flashed by a built in usb C -> serial converter. Using the usb C OTG is specified by Sovol to flash a recovery image. My goal is to update to a Trixie based system and install mainstream Klipper. I'm a long time Linux user and found some alternative flash tools, Debian actually provides an rkdeveloptool package. I know a little bit about u-boot and built my own OpenWRT firmware.
I've built x86_64 kernels and know my mainboard version has a broadcom wifi chip. Older versions used realtek.

In OpenWRT, you could build an initramfs image for testing. Is it possible to boot from an image not on emmc to test?

Have you managed to attach a serial console to see the output from u-boot?
If so, then it should be possible to interrupt the boot process to get into an u-boot shell and select a different boot device there.

In some prior u-boot version, the command to boot from a different usb device was

run bootcmd_usb0

For the recent u-boot version, the commands are

setenv boot_targets usb
boot

But u-boot for the ACE board may be compiled with different options.

• You can use setenv to print the environment variables and search the output for anything that looks like boot-commands (e.g. "bootcmd_usb0" or lists of boot-devices (e.g. "boot_targets" containing sth like "usb emmc nvme")

I'm a long time linux user and I have used the screen program with a usb-serial converter for my OpenWRT router. My understanding is that the USB C port on the board is actually a usb-serial converter that needs a baud rate of 1500000. I'll try it later today. I know that being able to pause u-boot, booting from a tftp server and usb booting are configuration options that not every router manufacturer implements. In my research on 3D printers, I have not run across anyone using serial output to boot from a tftp server or usb drive.

I was unable to map my usb A -> usb C data cable to a /dev/tty* but was able to connect with a PL2303 convertor on the debug serial pins.

Have to start with the brom mode button depressed. I logged the output. It scrolls by fast - it will be a challenge to Ctrl+C to stop u-boot.
