Meeting the new GNOME Executive Director really energized me, and as luck would have it, Miguel de Icaza followed me on bsky today. A bright future, memories of a great past, all that stuff. This piece of lore must be immortalized.

We need a new version of the gnome-stracciatella-session from ubuntu: https://piware.de/2009/02/the-stracciatella-gnome-session/
We want a GNOME session that is selectable in the gear thing in GDM that is as close to the upstream GNOME experience as we can with the least amount of overhead. So flatpak selection is out of scope we'd have to account for switching the user's apps and stuff, too high touch. So I'm thinking turn off the extensions and not applying the dconf changes should do the trick? Then we'd set the default wallpaper.
But it has to have a cool name, stracciatella is too much.
From a branding perspective, I gravitate towards "Bluefin Zen Mode" or whatever we decide on. There's so much past bickering over dconf keys and settings (The great Unity wars .. lol). People post on r/gnome on how zen upstream GNOME feels, and how you have to like, "get it". They describe it as this chill vibe, especially with a touchpad etc. However sometimes people want to argue about indicators or whatever. So instead of a binary choice, maybe our thing could be the one that ships them as a mode toggle.
The docs would explain it as the GNOME experience, but not in a Linux way. We don't say things like "upstream", no nerd stuff. This page is basically a GNOME commercial but we use something else "Powered by GNOME" or something that gives OSes a cool badge. This would be a co-branding program of sorts as well, so good marketing opportunities.
It's just config, we can ship both, one as a compliment to each other. Then in the docs/features it becomes "Bluefin features a Zen mode, an optional desktop layout focused on $gnome_keywords". Not using the GNOME branding for the feature could be contentious but also calling it "GNOME Session" is also fine if it is.
This feature is a little gimmicky but also ... what I think GNOME should do is incentivize distros to ship a config like this. Gimme a cute badge to put on my webpage. And then gnome.org/zenmode which explains this or something. Who knows maybe the discourse could turn into "Zen mode? I love it, do you?" and not "GNOME took my indicators I want to punch someone."
Framework 12's are coming. I use the unity-style desktop but I can see use cases where I want the zen mode, especially on a 2 in 1 that I use a lot for media consumption? I'll take it!
