Common plugs management. #2003

Is there an existing issue for this?

  • I have searched the existing issues and found none matching what I'm reporting.

Is the feature related to a problem or existing issue?

It is very common to install an app and not be able to use certain features, such as a gamepad or access items in the /media and /mnt folders.

In standard Ubuntu, with Gnome, there is an option to connect and disconnect some plugs, but this is in the Gnome settings.

The problem with this is that if the user sees this list of apps in the Gnome settings and does not specifically click on a Snap app, they may think that those are all the settings available for the apps, and then think that there is no way to connect or disconnect plugs without using the terminal.

And since this is only something in Gnome, it is not available in other flavors of Ubuntu.

Describe the feature, why the feature matters to you, and what benefits the feature will bring about.

A simple plug manager that can be used to connect or disconnect plugs from Snap apps, such as removable media, joysticks, bluez, etc.

I made an app for this purpose, Kyunnect, a PyQt6 app, but it uses the system's “snap” command, and since it is not a Snap, this prevents it from being used by older versions of Ubuntu.

And anyway, I imagine that the right place for such a function is within the Snap Store.

Describe any alternatives you've considered.

Additional context

The only thing I have to add is my experience with Snap apps. Since there is no easy-to-find plug manager available for standard Ubuntu and its flavors, I didn't know how to access my hard drives, which confused me greatly, as some Snap apps could access them while others could not.
