Updating Tab placements

Hi, I need help with the structure of updating the Tab placement function - I can't wrap my head around it for some reason! I want to get all my tabs, then place an external tool tab into the course navigation.

Here is my general code:

API_URL = MY_INSTITUTION_URL
API_KEY = MyToken.secret
canvas = Canvas(API_URL, API_KEY)

### Get course
course = canvas.get_course(MY_COURSE_I'M_MESSING_WITH)

### Get tabs 
tabPlacement = course.get_tabs()
newList = []

### paginated list for the Tabs
for i in tabPlacement:
    newList.append(i.label + ' ' + i.id)
    # newList.append(i.id)

### find the external tool named "packback" out of the list of all tabs
l1 = [k for k in newList if 'Packback' in k]

### code to place the tool in the course navigation
tab = course.update()

newTab = tab(
    # context_external_tool_439535,
    hidden = 'true',
    position = 2
)

Hi @bertschj1,

The Course.get_tabs() method returns a paginated list of Tab objects. From the desired Tab object, you can call its update() function directly. For whatever reason, Canvas doesn't let you get a tab object directly from an ID, so you'll have to use one of the ones in the list from get_tabs().

Something like this should do the trick:

course = canvas.get_course(COURSE_ID)

tabs = course.get_tabs()

for tab in tabs:
    if "Packback" in tab.label:
        tab.update(position=2, hidden=True)

You may need to adjust position or hidden.
