Binary sensor for Doorbell button with "Pressed" and "Released" states

Currently HA users only have access to the "last_doorbell_ring" sensor, and the only available states are "Unavailable" and "Unknown".

My doorbell automation sends chimes through my house speakers. It's set to trigger on any state change. This works when the doorbell button is pressed, but the state sometimes changes randomly without apparent reason, causing doorbell chimes at odd hours like 3:30am. Not at all wife approved.

I'm wondering if another sensor can be added that supports "Pressed" and "Released" states.

I'm not aware of alternatives, but open to using a workaround if someone has one in mind.

The doorbell should now be implemented as an event entity. The event entity was not available when it was originally added to Home Assistant

The integration is looking for a maintainer, and I’m just helping out to keep it warm until someone can be found, so we have to wait for them to take a look at that unless it's something you would like to add to HA

Yes please. Hopefully someone knows what's wrong.

I will have access to a UI doorbell next month when I'm visiting family so I can try to replicate it than if nobody has come up with a solution by than.

My doorbell works fine, it is in HA as binary_sensor.g4_doorbell_pro_doorbell and can be Occupied and Clear as states.

This still works after HA version 2024.6.2.

That is an Occupancy sensor and not associated with the physical doorbell button on the device.

I just logged into my family members's HA install and noticed that these sensors are disabled by default. Once I enabled it, its showing the last ring as expected. I'm physically ~4000 miles away from where its located so I can't actually do any live testing though.

Is there a chance the sensor is disabled in HA?

Correct, I did the same thing. The "Last Doorbell Ring" entity is disabled by default. It's the closest entity type I can find that meets my needs. But I'm afraid the only available states are Unknown and Unavailable; nothing that is associated with button presses on the device itself.

Is there something else in HA I have to enable?

On second thought, that sensor I mentioned is the one I use to detect the button being pressed... pretty sure that is what it is for... Is that not what you want?

Yes, that binary sensor is what I also use for the doorbell press. However, it's just marked as an Occupancy sensor by default.

None of the other options really make sense. Seems HA should add a "button" type so it's either Pressed or Not-Pressed.

Is it not occupied as long as it's pressed? I cannot test that now as the family is already sleeping...
