Android doesn't detect internet connection without restarting the app

1. Open the app
2. Go offline
   ... 'Offline' bar shows
3. Go back online
   ... 'Offline' bar still shows

I could only get the app to detect a connection by closing and restarting the app.

This is a phone running Android v6.0.1, with MIUI OS ... its possible this could be something odd in their permissions model, vs stock android.
@jshorland maybe test on a different phone too?
