moving qcow2 from UTM to UTM

I was trying to move an existing qcow2 disk drive in macos from one UTM to another.

$ mv Library/Containers/com.utmapp.UTM/Data/Documents/utm1.utm/Data/*qcow2 Library/Containers/com.utmapp.UTM/Data/Documents/utm1.utm/Data/*qcow2

this worked great...except that the files disappeared into the void. no longer to be found. the entire qcow2 file. lots of work, of course not backed up. my bad.

I also can no longer boot an existing UTM with its existing qcow file after I am just importing a third utm's qcow2 file into a new VirtIO drive, either. I would think this should not interfere with the booting process.

I believe both of these operations used to work. maybe this is just on my system...
