Plugin icon keeps resetting to “off” when compressor is enabled

I’ve been using the plugin for ages, and I love it. But one small issue it’s had since I first installed it is that the plugin icon would randomly switch from “enabled” (red line) back to “disabled” (no red line) after a while, even though the compressor was still on. This usually took a while, several minutes or longer, and toggling the compressor off and on again would fix it for a time.

However, I just updated to Firefox v149.0, and now the icon refuses to stay “enabled” for more than a few seconds, and sometimes it won’t change at all, even when I hammer the hotkeys. I have to check whether the “Enabled” checkbox is ticked (or toggle the hotkey and listen for a difference in the audio) to see if it’s actually working.

Quick update: I’ve noticed the icon always immediately reverts to “off” when a new window or tab is opened or closed.

The indicator in the icon is per-tab, as in you can have a tab where the compressor is on and another tab where it's off. So if you're switching to a tab where it's not active it'll show as off. Is that what you're describing?

Or are you saying it switches to showing as off while you stay in the tab its enabled in? And also, is the compressor actually turning off or is it just the indicator not working correctly?

I'm not seeing what you're describing, so if it's not the per-tab switching, is there some other plugin you have that might be interfering? Any other plugin that modifies the audio or video?

It’s interesting that you say the compressor is meant to be per-tab, as it has never worked per-tab for me, to the point where I always assumed it was designed to be browser-wide. Whenever I activate it (either via hotkey or by manually ticking the box), it enables/disables on all tabs and windows (including just now, when I tested just to make sure). It then stays enabled/disabled (whichever I last set) regardless of what the icon indicates.

Here’s what the typical behavior looks like:

• I open two browser windows, one with Google, one with YouTube
• I activate Audio Compressor in the YouTube window; plugin’s “Enable” box is checked and icon switches to “enabled” in both windows
• Whilst YouTube plays, I use the Google window for a while (audio in that window is either compressed or silent, depending on the source, so I toggle plugin off briefly if I need to listen to something else)
• Eventually I open a second tab in the Google window
• Icon indicator switches to “off”, but checking it manually shows the “Enable” box is still checked
• Hit the hotkeys to toggle plugin on/off again, which switches icon back to “enabled” on all windows/tabs
• Eventually YouTube video finishes, and from the Google window I hit the hotkey to disable the plugin
• Plugin and icon now disabled on all windows/tabs

Like I said, the plugin has never once worked per-tab for me, so if it’s really meant to be that way (and if it actually does for other users) then … welp. 🥴

As for interference, I don’t have any other plugins installed that directly affect audio or video. Though I suppose I could test using a new profile with only Audio Compressor installed, to see how it works in isolation; haven’t had the time to try that yet.

It sounds like you're using it without saving settings for different sites and just enabling/disabling it manually. Which works, but if you save settings for a specific site, it will switch to those settings anytime you go there. Like in the image below, if you click the youtube.com part of the "Save settings for" area, it will make a profile for that site. Then you can leave it enabled for Youtube and disable it in the Default profile and not have to manually switch it.

Ah, that’s what you mean by “per-tab”. Yeah, I use the plugin for specific videos that I usually watch only once, not entire websites, so I don’t use the site-specific settings since I don’t want to enable it for all YT videos.

Quick update: I’m not sure what changed on my end, but the issue with the indicator constantly reverting to “disabled” after merely seconds seems to have gone away, and the icon is now working normally as it did before.
