documentation around shared folders / scenarios for plugin or theme dev

I'm a new user, just cloning and about to fiddle, but I'm apprehensive about shared folder setup as I didn't see an example in the docs.

I'm happy to contribute some time to update the documentation. If I don't figure it out during next few days, perhaps someone can update docs to help the next one like me with a use case of plugin or theme developer and how they get their local plugin/theme's repo into the vm.
