Float la LaTeX figure

Is it possible with Vivliostyle to specify floats similar to those in LaTeX (obtained with \begin{figure}[ht]...\end{figure}).
This would place the figure in its natural location if there is space, otherwise the float would be moved to the top of the next page, and the space at the bottom of the page freed up by the float would then be occupied by the text following the anchor of the float.

Vivliostyle supports CSS Page Floats. You can find details of what is currently supported in our documentation: Supported CSS Features – CSS Page Floats.

However, the specific behavior you are describing — where a figure stays at its natural position in the flow if there is sufficient space on the current page, but is otherwise moved to the top of the next page with the freed space filled by subsequent text — is not yet implemented in Vivliostyle.

This behavior corresponds to the snap-block() value defined in the CSS Page Floats draft specification. EXAMPLE 3 in that spec illustrates exactly this kind of placement: when a figure appears close to a page/column break and there is not enough space to fit it in the current column, snap-block causes it to float to the nearest block edge, allowing subsequent text to fill the space that would otherwise be left blank.

We plan to consider implementing this feature in future version of Vivliostyle, so stay tuned!

(Note: the snap-block value currently implemented in Vivliostyle means always float to block-start or block-end and is different from the spec.)
