Plans for version 3.x/4.x release?

We plan to collect some feedback and comments on the library interface next week and then to make a 4.0 essentially directly, so within a month from now. This will include the change to LGPL as well as the big changes to the code from the last years.

It is planned that within half a year, there would also be a 4.1 release which would include any collected corrections that we may have missed in 4.0 as well as some more physics related changes.

I'll be seeing Giovanni and most of the Developer Group next week, so possibly we will refine/update this plan here at that time.

Do you have some requirements/requests that would make the process easier for you?

This would actually be important for me. Do you have some links of the commit, issues or such to double-check the process. Recently there was quite a big scandal with chardet around that, and would want to make sure other projects do not end up in a similar spotlight.

Sounds good, but would the cadance continue. Would encourage having more frequent releases, even if they are release candidate. I can coordinate from Fedora side to make sure any dependents are compatible. So far there are no dependents there (other than quantum-espresso that needs to be patched to more flexibly pick it), but if you know some other projects that would use it, feel free to pass it my way and I can add it for packaging as part of Fedora Science 😉

About the license change, the practical change in the source files is currently in PR #598 . It contains updates to the headers of all the sources, the LIC file itself and in a couple of odd places.

The main significant work--collecting the authorisation from all past and current authors and contributors for the change--was done by the Dev Group per email: I believe that process is now complete such that it is now correct to make the change. This was the reason also for implementing the CLA to collect this authorisation on a rolling basis for the future.

@LecrisUT we released version 4.0.0 a production 4.1.0 is expected after the Trieste meeting in September this year (so, reasonably to be expected October/November).

(We should discuss how to approach making a more proper schedule, I guess?)

Perfect. My only comment for a schedule is if you would follow a RC release, and maybe try to at least account for gcc release cycle (not to have numerous breaking changes still pending on main when a new gcc release lands)
