XDR upscaling and heat - is it a problem? #1795
-
I'm not sure if this is supposed to happen, but my macbook pro 14's built in display gets extremely hot when using extended XDR brightness. How does this affect the longevity of the display ? |

Hi guys, take a look at this: https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDisplay/wiki/XDR-and-HDR-brightness-upscaling#softwarehardware-safety-considerations The screen should be safe - it is designed to withstand sunlight and there are hardware failsafes built-in as well. The app is using standard macOS APIs in a creative way to achieve the effect and not doing anything special from the screen's standpoint that would not happen while watching a HDR movie. The main issue with XDR upscaling is not heat but battery consumption due to how battery drain proportionality with perceived brightness levels - this should be kept in mind when using the feature on the go. |

I've noticed a significant increase in temp. after enabling the feature. I have since disabled it and the heat issues have stopped. |
