The black / gain controls look like a potentially promising way to improve the accuracy of some HDR monitors (especially as there is no ICC standard for HDR yet, and many HDR monitors lack hardware controls in the on screen display - so ensuring a more neutral diffuse white may help grey tracking).
However, the DDC controls in BetterDisplay appear unreliable when using them with the Xiaomi Mini LED Gaming Monitor G Pro 27i (model P27QBA-RGPGL). The display will update sometimes and not others. The sliders in BetterDisplay do not seem to reflect the values in the monitor, and at times I've seen the monitor get stuck and doing a factory reset in BetterDisplay was the only way I found to bring the display back.
