There’s a way to know the peak brightness macOS is getting from my monitor?

Hi guys!
I don’t know if my question makes sense but I’ll try anyway 😄
I’ve set my external monitor to peak 1000 nits mode but I have no idea if macOS is “aware” of this or not.
Windows shows you the peak brightness of the monitor in settings (probably takes it from the EDID of the monitor), there’s some way to get the same information in macos?

In HDR mode you can get this info, yes.

I am sorry, the app currently does not show this information directly. You can check however using the HDR upscaling calibrator and click on the auto calibrate button - this should set the peak white on screen to the reported max brightness. This should give some kind of feedback whether this value is right.

@waydabber Is there a way for it to report the peak nits of the display as listed in the EDID? Windows shows this and it is very handy (helped confirm a bug in a monitor I tested recently).

It would also help quite a bit if the target SDR brightness could be shown in nits. Many people don't have easy access to a colorimeter, but knowing the peak HDR nits and HDR headroom this could be inferred down to at least the point where the OS may limit the HDR peak brightness (not sure if there is any data from MacOS directly on the SDR white point to ensure an accurate value across the full range of brightness slider values in system settings).

Yes, simply download the EDID, open it with apps like AW EDID Editor and see HDR related data in it. The OS can also report the peak HDR brightness (EDR headroom) relative to the currently configured SDR peak brightness (in HDR mode). A nits value can also be calculated. I might add an entry about it in the Display Information.

@waydabber Thank you, that would be handy. The actual nits (peak HDR nits from EDID, and SDR / diffuse white nits where possible) would be very helpful.
