Volume Control Fails with TP-Link USB-C to HDMI Dongle #4328

Do you have any other DDC control working? Like brightness, contrast, etc? How about DDC detection - does it detect everything properly, including control availability for volume? Sadly only a subset of USB-C - HDMI dongles facilitate DDC connection properly (try VMM7100 based dongles, they should work best). |

Hi @waydabber! Brightness is working pretty well. And it also does detect everything properly, including control availability for volume. The only issue I am facing is with the volume adjustment. Although, I looked it up and found out about 'SoundSource', and with that app, I am able to control the sound setting even with the dongle plugged in (with the help of SoundSource). Is it something that is normal? |

Yes, SoundSource does not use DDC but installs an audio filter device that will change the digital audio stream itself - so it is not controlling the display's amplifier to adjust the volume. |

Description
When using BetterDisplay to control the volume of an external monitor (Samsung Odyssey G5, new version) connected via a TP-Link USB-C to HDMI dongle (model: B0DQTLDKD2) on a MacBook Pro M3 Pro running macOS 15 Sequoia, the volume control functionality does not work. This issue occurs with both BetterDisplay and macOS native volume controls (keyboard media keys) when the dongle is used. However, volume control works correctly when the monitor is connected directly via HDMI.
Steps to Reproduce
Expected Behavior
BetterDisplay and macOS keyboard media keys should adjust the monitor’s speaker volume, as they do when the monitor is connected directly via HDMI.
Actual Behavior
BetterDisplay fails to control the monitor’s volume.
macOS keyboard media keys also fail to adjust the volume.
The monitor is recognized as an audio output device in System Settings > Sound > Output, but volume adjustments have no effect.
Additional Details
The issue does not occur when using a direct HDMI connection to the MacBook.
Another audio control app, SoundSource, successfully controls the monitor’s volume when using the same TP-Link dongle, indicating the dongle’s audio passthrough is functional.
The monitor’s speakers are enabled, and the volume is not muted in the OSD menu.
No firmware updates were found for the TP-Link dongle on the manufacturer’s website.
macOS and BetterDisplay are updated to the latest versions as of May 1, 2025.
Environment
OS: macOS 15 Sequoia (latest version)
Hardware: MacBook Pro M3 Pro
Monitor: Samsung Odyssey G5 (new version)
Dongle: TP-Link USB-C to HDMI (B0DQTLDKD2)
BetterDisplay: Latest version
Alternative App: SoundSource (works as expected)
Request
Please investigate why BetterDisplay fails to control the monitor’s volume when using the TP-Link dongle, given that SoundSource works in the same setup. A workaround or fix to restore volume control functionality would be greatly appreciated.
