well, I am afraid this is not possible, macOS currently does not support disengaging from an external display. You can put the display into standby mode (sleep). However I think it is possible to use your macbook with no display connected (and lid closed) in essentially a headless mode if there is a power source connected - you'll need to disable sleep in order to do that via some terminal commands if I remember correctly ( |

Is there any way to turn the external display off? Currently I can reduce the brightness to 0, but the screen is very much on. Even the power consumption (verified with an external device) is still the same. The only way I can turn the screen off, is by pressing the power button on the monitor. That puts the mac into sleep unfortunately. The monitor and mac are connected by usb-c.
