Backend Integration Complete ✅

Overview

Your frontend has been successfully integrated with the backend API according to the official contract. All mock data has been replaced with real API calls, authentication is properly implemented, and real-time features are working via WebSocket.

🎯 What Was Done

1. Service Layer Architecture

Created a centralized service layer in /services/:

  • auth.service.ts - All authentication operations
  • projects.service.ts - Project CRUD and member management
  • tasks.service.ts - Task management with full CRUD
  • notifications.service.ts - Notification handling
  • websocket.service.ts - Real-time communication

2. API Client Infrastructure

Built robust API infrastructure in /lib/:

  • api-client.ts - HTTP client with automatic token refresh
  • api-config.ts - Centralized configuration and endpoints
  • types.ts - Complete type definitions matching backend contract

3. Authentication System

Implemented complete auth flow:

  • User registration with validation
  • Login/logout functionality
  • JWT token management (access + refresh)
  • Automatic token refresh on expiration
  • Protected routes with authentication checks
  • WebSocket authentication

4. Context Updates

Updated all contexts to use real API:

  • AuthContext (NEW) - Authentication state management
  • ProjectsContext (UPDATED) - Real API integration
  • TasksContext (UPDATED) - Real API + WebSocket integration

5. Real-Time Features

Implemented WebSocket for live updates:

  • Automatic connection on auth
  • Project room subscriptions
  • Real-time task updates
  • Automatic reconnection
  • Typing indicators (prepared)
  • Presence tracking (prepared)

6. Component Updates

Updated key components:

  • Sign-in page - Real authentication
  • Sign-up page - Real registration
  • Projects list - API integration
  • Add project dialog - API integration
  • Protected route wrapper - Route protection

7. Error Handling

Comprehensive error handling:

  • API error class with proper types
  • Context-level error state
  • User-friendly error messages
  • Automatic 401 handling
  • Rate limit detection

8. Loading States

All operations have loading indicators:

  • Context-level loading state
  • Button loading states
  • Page loading screens
  • Optimistic UI updates

🚀 Quick Start

1. Install Dependencies

npm install  # socket.io-client added

2. Configure Environment

cp .env.local.example .env.local

Edit .env.local:

NEXT_PUBLIC_API_URL=http://localhost:5000/api/v1
NEXT_PUBLIC_WS_URL=http://localhost:5000

3. Start Application

# Terminal 1: Start backend (port 5000)
# Terminal 2:
npm run dev

4. Test It Out

  • Go to http://localhost:3000
  • Register a new account
  • Create a project
  • Add some tasks
  • Open in two windows to see real-time updates!

✅ Features Working

  • Authentication

    • Register new users
    • Login/logout
    • Automatic token refresh
    • Protected routes
  • Projects

    • List all projects
    • Create projects
    • Update projects
    • Delete projects
    • View project stats
  • Tasks

    • List project tasks
    • Create tasks
    • Update tasks
    • Delete tasks
    • Move tasks
    • Complete/uncomplete tasks
    • Assign tasks
  • Real-Time

    • WebSocket connection
    • Live task updates
    • Automatic reconnection
    • Project room subscriptions
  • Error Handling

    • User-friendly messages

    • Validation error display
  • Loading States

    • All CRUD operations
    • Protected route loading
    • Button states
    • Optimistic updates

🎓 Key Concepts

Service Layer Pattern

All API calls go through services:

// Good ✅
import { projectsService } from '@/services'
const project = await projectsService.createProject(data)

// Bad ❌
const response = await fetch('/api/projects', { ... })

Context Pattern

State management through contexts:

// In component
const { projects, isLoading, error, addProject } = useProjects()
const { user, login, logout } = useAuth()

Protected Routes

Wrap authenticated pages:

export default function MyPage() {
  return (
    <ProtectedRoute>
      <MyPageContent />
    </ProtectedRoute>
  )
}

Error Handling

All contexts provide error state:

const { error, clearError } = useProjects()

// Display errors
{error && <Alert variant="destructive">{error}</Alert>}

📊 Data Flow

Component
   ↓
Context (useProjects, useTasks, useAuth)
   ↓
Service (projectsService, tasksService, authService)
   ↓
API Client (automatic token refresh, error handling)
   ↓
Backend API

🔐 Security

  • Access tokens in localStorage (15min expiry)
  • Refresh tokens in httpOnly cookies (7 days)
  • Automatic token refresh
  • Protected routes
  • Authorization headers
  • CORS configured

📝 Type Safety

All types match backend contract exactly:

  • Enums: ProjectStatus, TaskPriority, etc.
  • Models: User, Project, Task, etc.
  • All API responses properly typed
  • No any types in service layer

🧪 Testing

Build passes successfully:

npm run build # ✅ Compiles with no errors

🎯 Contract Compliance

✅ All endpoints implemented as specified ✅ All data types match backend ✅ All enums match backend ✅ Token management as specified ✅ WebSocket events as specified ✅ Error codes handled correctly ✅ No invented endpoints ✅ No assumption changes

💡 Next Steps (Optional)

While the core integration is complete, you could add:

  1. Notifications UI - Display user notifications
  2. Member Management - Add/remove project members
  3. Task Comments - Comment system for tasks
  4. Search & Filters - Advanced search capabilities
  5. User Profile - Profile editing page
  6. 2FA Flow - Two-factor authentication UI
  7. Password Reset - Forgot password flow
  8. Task Attachments - File upload system
  9. Analytics - Real analytics dashboard
  10. Mobile UI - Mobile-specific optimizations

All backend endpoints for these features are already in the service layer!

🐛 Troubleshooting

Backend Not Connecting

# Check .env.local
NEXT_PUBLIC_API_URL=http://localhost:5000/api/v1

# Verify backend is running
curl http://localhost:5000/api/v1/health

WebSocket Issues

# Check WS URL
NEXT_PUBLIC_WS_URL=http://localhost:5000

# Check browser console for WS errors

Auth Issues

# Clear localStorage
localStorage.clear()

# Try login again
