which versions of the software should we include?

Add some justification for why this specific package and versions are important.

It would pair well with a distroless solution like Wolfi (similar to Talos Linux for Kubernetes) and benefit from a glibc base, unlike Alpine Linux

i add a PR to add apptainer here #40548 but note that Wolfi still has some missing deps to make apptainer usable.

Update: I added squashfs-tools there so that it can build now
