failure.</p>

<h2>Overview</h2>
<p>
Shutting down the RBMK-1500 reactor at Oakridge is a skill all operators must master. It can save your job or
prevent a devastating nuclear fallout.
</p>
<p>
Typically, shutdowns occur at the end of a shift or for realism purposes. Follow this guide carefully to ensure
safety.

<strong>Note:</strong> If the reactor becomes unstable (low water, high pressure, or scram), refer immediately
to the <a href="emergency.html" style="color:#80c7ff;">Emergency Procedures</a> page.

<h2>Shutdown Checklist</h2>
<p>Call the Grid Controller and pick Go Offline.</p>
<p>Do this by clicking on the left telephone's recever, dialing <span class="inline-codeblock">7782</span>, once
it connects, pick <span class="inline-codeblock">Go Offline</span></span></p>
<br>
<h2>Stage One</h2>
<h3>Reduce Reactor Power<a target="_blank" href="/control-room.html#reactor"><sup>[i]</sup></a></h3>
<ul>
<li>Go to the Center Reactor panel and type the numbers <strong>3400</strong> into the Auto Control Rods keypad
and
click the grey button to set.</li>
<li>Insert control rods in a symmetrical pattern, the selection of control rods is not limited to 12 whilst
inserting rods.</li>
<li>Watch the water temperature, if it goes lower than 400, lower one Main Circulation Pump to its lowest
setting on
both sides.</li>
<li>Do not reduce power too quickly, take time with the reduction of power as it could result in a turbine trip.
</li>
</ul>

<h3>Deaerator Configuration</h3>
<ul>
<li>Disable Deaerator Auto Control.</li>
<li>Set Deaerator Inlets, both A and B, to <strong>0%</strong>.</li>
<li>Set Deaerator Outlets, both A and B, to <strong>50%</strong>.</li>
</ul>
<br>
<h3>Prepare <strong>TURBINE B</strong> For Rundown</h3>
<ul>
<li>Close Turbine A-B Bleed Valve.</li>
<li>Enable the Bypass Valve for Turbine B.</li>
<li>Set the Automatic Bypass for Turbine B to 50.</li>
<li>Set the Bypass Valve of Turbine B to <strong>60%</strong>.</li>
</ul>

<h2>Stage 2</h2>
<h3>Rundown Turbine B</h3>
<ul>
<li>Set Automatic Bypass for Turbine B to <strong>0</strong>.</li>
<li class="r">Wait for the Generator Output of Turbine B to decrease <strong>Below 10 MW</strong>.</li>
<li>Go to the Plant Circuit Panel and Disable Generator B.</li>
<li>Disable the Auto Bypass Valve for Turbine B.</li>
<li>Decrease Turbine B Turbine Valve to <strong>0%</strong>.</li>
<li>Decrease Turbine B Bypass Valve to <strong>0%</strong>.</li>
<li>When pressure in both steam lines is identical, open Turbine A-B Bleed Valve.</li>
</ul>
<br>
<h3>Shutdown Unnecessary Sub Systems</h3>
<ul>
<li>Disable Condenser Coolant Pumps B1, B2, B3, B4, and A3, A4.</li>
<li>Disable Feedwater Pump 2.</li>
<li>Disable Condensate Pump 2.</li>
</ul>

<h3>Lower Reactor Thermal [ 2100 MW ]</h3>
<ul>
<li>Enter the numbers <strong>2100</strong> into the Auto Control Rods Keypad and click the grey button to set.
</li>
<li>Reduce Main Circulation Pumps A2 and A1 to speed 2.</li>
<li>Insert control rods.</li>
<li class="r">Keep an eye on Turbine A generator output. <strong>DO NOT LET IT DROP BELOW 100MW.<a
target="_blank" href="/control-room.html#turbine"><sup>[i]</div></sup></a></strong></li>
</ul>

<h2>Stage 3</h2>
<h3>Call Grid Controller</h3>
<ul>
<li>Call the Grid Controller and pick Clearance.</li>
</ul>
<br>
<h3>Plant Startup Transformer</h3>
<ul>
<li class="r">Ensure plant power usage does not exceed the maximum load of <strong>30MW</strong>.</li>
<li>Prime G1<64A if not already primed.</li>
<li>Press the G1<64A Button.</li>
<li>Ensure 64B-M breaker trips, if not automatically disabled, disable.</li>
</ul>
<br>
<h3>Rundown Turbine A</h3>
<ul>
<li>Enable Turbine A Bypass Valve.</li>
<li>Set Automatic Bypass of Turbine A to <strong>0</strong>.</li>
<li class="r">Wait for Turbine Generator A output is <strong>Below 10 MW</strong>.</li>
<li>Go to the Plant Circuit Panel and disable Generator A.</li>
<li>Disable Turbine A Automatic Bypass Valve.</li>
<li>Reduce the Turbine Valve of Turbine A to <strong>0%</strong>.</li>
<li>Set Bypass Valve of Turbine A to <strong>100%</strong>.</li>
</ul>
<br>
<h3>Initiate Reactor Soft Scram</h3>
<ul>
<li>Set Reactor Mode to 0.</li>
<li>Acknowledge Mode Conflict.</li>
<li>Set Main Circulation Pumps A1 and A2 to speed 1.</li>
<li>Disable Shutdown Control Rods.</li>
</ul>
<br>
<h3>Offline Core Cooling</h3>
<ul>
<li>Enable OCC Circulation Pumps 1 and 2.</li>
<li>Enable Heat Exchanger Valves A and B.</li>
<li>Click the Reset button next to the Acknowledge button.</li>
</ul>
<br>
<h2>Stage 4</h2>
<h3>Feedwater and Condensate</h3>
<ul>
<li class="r">Wait for Reactor water temperature to fall below 212.</li>
<li>Disable Condensate Pump 1.</li>
<li>Disable Feedwater Pump 1.</li>
</ul>
<br>
<h3>Turbine Turbine Gear.</h3>
<ul>
<li>Call Engineering and Click Turning gear, Enable Turbine B Turning Gear. </li>
<li>Put the phone back and pick it back up and call Engineering again and enable Turbine A Turning Gear.</li>
</ul>
<br>
<h3>Disable Main Transformer</h3>
<ul>
<li>Disable 18M-G1 Breaker.</li>
</ul>
<br>
<h3>Remaining Systems</h3>
<ul>
<li>Disable all Condenser Coolant Pumps.</li>
<li>Close Turbine and Bypass Valves.</li>
<li>Disable Automatic Feed Limiter.</li>
<li>Disable Automatic Hotwell Limiter.</li>
<li>Disable Automatic Control rods.</li>
<li>Close Reactor Isolation Valves.</li>
</ul>
<br>
<h3>Purge Remaining Steam</h3>
<ul>
<li>Using Pressure Relief valves 5 and 7 remove any remaining steam until the steam lines A and B are below 50
PSI.</li>
</ul>
<br>
<h3>Request Inspection</h3>
<ul>
<li class="r">Ensure all rods are inserted and the OCC is functional.</li>
<li>Call Engineering and click Inspection
(this will only work if you're on the very last day of work).</li>
