XDG essentially has two "modes of operation" right now with Surface Tracking being the historical usecase of DAGMC for surface-to-surface ray tracing intersections and Volume Tracking being used for tracking particles through volumetric elements.
Probably worth extending the documentation to capture these two different algorithms and the internal XDG methods which are used to perform them. We already have the associated diagrams for each of the two ready to go.
Can also probably cannibalise some of the information in openmc-dev/openmc#3889 for the volume tracking stuff too.
