I use knit2pdf with latex source and r code chunks and it works great

now with typst so much faster and simpler, one would need a knit2typst variant

quarto is too complicated since you cannot inherit the global environment of an existing r session

more over you need to write markdown to get typst where it would be simpler to just write typst from the start, with R code chunks resolved as usual

so the desired workflow with typst would be

recognition of Rtyp template files in Rstudio with syntax highlighting as for latex or markdown

then a knit2typst_pdf function that inherit the session as for knit2pdf /latex and directly calls the typst compiler instead of latex compiler, and optionally leaves the intermediate .typ file around
for inspection

This would be a feature request in RStudio IDE, once there is a .Rtyp support. Let's keep focus on one thing at a time.

knit2pdf calls knitr::knit() first. So this is first a matter of knitr::knit() support for .Rtyp file. .Rtyp being like .Rhtml: A .typ file with standard typst syntax, but with some specific syntax for code cells so that knit() can parse and evaluate those.

So this is about a new syntax support, but also some output support - when using knit2pdf, the source file is transformed to a .tex file - which means plot for example are inserted using the right syntax. For typst support, it would also mean having support for outputing the correct typst syntax.

Calling the typst compiler after the knit() is the easy part here. The rest is not that trivial. Definitely a new feature that requires a bit of engineering and knowledge about Typst syntax.

I can see the benefit of supporting such new format in knitr though. Thanks for the feature request.
