Which branch to follow?

In the readme it is recommended to build the image from source, from tags.
Since it seems tags happen on a very slow schedule, we have taken to building the image from the master branch.

Recently it has become clear that some vital bugfixes are done in the trigger branch, which only occasionally is synced with the master branch.

So we are wondering which branch is recommended to follow when building the image from source?

Or is the recommendation to only use the tags, which are only sporadically updated?
