Keyboard Shortcuts & Commands

Speed up your VaultAI workflow with keyboard shortcuts and command access.

Default Shortcuts

Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+V - Toggle VaultAI Chat

  • Works from anywhere in Obsidian
  • Your primary AI access key

Command Palette

Press Ctrl/Cmd+P and search for VaultAI commands:

Core Commands

  • Generate content at cursor - Creates content at cursor position
  • Complete current line - Finishes sentences intelligently
  • Explain selected text - Get explanations of selected content
  • Improve selected text - Enhance clarity and readability
  • Toggle insert mode - Enable/disable cursor insertion

Custom Prompts

  • Each custom prompt becomes a command
  • Format: "Custom Prompt: [Your Prompt Name]"

Assigning Custom Hotkeys

  1. SettingsHotkeys
  2. Search for "VaultAI"
  3. Click "+" next to any command
  4. Press your desired key combination
  5. Click "Set hotkey"

Recommended Setups

Power User

  • Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+V - Toggle chat (default)
  • Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+G - Generate content at cursor
  • Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+E - Explain selected text
  • Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+I - Toggle insert mode

Writer Focus

  • Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+V - Toggle chat (default)
  • Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+C - Complete current line
  • Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+P - Improve selected text
  • F1 - Your most-used custom prompt

Workflow Tips

Command Palette Workflow

  1. Press Ctrl/Cmd+P
  2. Type partial command name
  3. Press Enter to execute

Hotkey Workflow

  1. Position cursor or select text
  2. Press assigned hotkey
  3. AI responds instantly

Hybrid Approach

  • Hotkeys for frequent actions
  • Command Palette for occasional tasks
  • Chat interface for conversations

Troubleshooting

Shortcut not working

  • Check for conflicts with other plugins
  • Verify command is enabled
  • Restart Obsidian after setting hotkeys

Command not appearing

  • Ensure VaultAI plugin is enabled
  • Check API key configuration
  • Search with "vault" to filter commands

Best Practices

  • Start with default toggle shortcut
  • Add one new hotkey per week
  • Use logical key combinations (G for Generate, E for Explain)
  • Avoid conflicts with Obsidian defaults
