Making multiplayer games is hard, and although mphx abstracts away some of the initial technical challenges, it's important to understand basic multiplayer networking concepts.

First of all, it's important to understand the basic client <-> server architecture, and how to make the most out of it. Here are some great places to find more information.

  • Gaffer On Games (it's a little long but end up saving you a descent chunk of time in the future)

It's also critical that you have a firm understanding of haxe. Use things like maps to your advantage while using mphx.
