Description

I heard the mixed metaphor "dig under the hood" in a YouTube video unrelated to cars or digging. My immediate thought was that I wouldn't trust any mechanic coming at my car with a shovel or spade.

It seems this only appeared in the early '90s according to Google Books. I wouldn't consider it a mixed metaphor when actually talking about cars, in which case it's just a regular metaphor. The message attempts to hedge against this case.

The variant with the British/Australian term "bonnet" is mostly such a regular metaphor but I found a few mixed metaphors for the texts.
