Alternatively, maybe instead of a resourceType we just have a filter. Then template authors can use whatever filter they want, such as resourceType eq 'Microsoft.KeyVault/vaults' and location eq $location. Though, to really make that work we'd need to support variable replacement, which also means resolving parameters sequentially, ideally doing location before all others because it'd be a likely filter.

Within a template - hence only checking during parameter processing - prompting for *any* resource is practically useless. You have to know the type to use as intended e.g., an Azure Monitor resource. To even use an existing resource in `reference()` or `resourceId()` functions you need to know the type, as do you in an `existing` resource template in Bicep.

I decided to make resourceType required for use in templates. As I was thinking through the scenarios and considering how to approach documentation, I realized that any resource is useless in a template (but allow the underlying prompting functions to do it in case that's useful down the road). You can't declare an existing resources in Bicep without knowing the type. You can't use ARM or Bicep template functions reference() or resourceId() without knowing the type. You also can't conceptually reference just any resource type e.g., you need to calculate a connection string to AppInsights but someone selected a Key Vault resource. It just doesn't make sense not to require resourceType in this case.

That would be one problem with a general filter as I proposed above as well. So maybe we keep and require resourceType, but you could still have an optional filter that we'd combine e.g. if a filter were specified, we'd and it in parens: resourceType eq "${resourceType}" and (${filter}).

The Azure Developer CLI (azd) is an open-source tool that helps onboard and manage your application on Azure

When run without any arguments, log in interactively using a browser. To log in using a device code, pass
--use-device-code.

To log in as a service principal, pass --client-id and --tenant-id as well as one of: --client-secret,
--client-certificate, or --federated-credential-provider.

To log in using a managed identity, pass --managed-identity, which will use the system assigned managed identity.
To use a user assigned managed identity, pass --client-id in addition to --managed-identity with the client id of
the user assigned managed identity you wish to use.

      --check-status                           Checks the log-in status instead of logging in.
      --client-certificate string              The path to the client certificate for the service principal to authenticate with.

Manage the Azure Developer CLI user configuration, which includes your default Azure subscription and location.

Available since azure-dev-cli_0.4.0-beta.1.

The easiest way to configure azd for the first time is to run azd init. The subscription and location you select will be stored in the config.json file located in the config directory. To configure azd anytime afterwards, you'll use azd config set.

The default value of the config directory is:

  • $HOME/.azd on Linux and macOS
  • %USERPROFILE%.azd on Windows

The configuration directory can be overridden by specifying a path in the AZD_CONFIG_DIR environment variable.

I think this should return an error. Since the intention of the method is to prompt, the fact of an empty list is a blocker to do the prompting, so it should return an error to the caller and report that there's no resources to prompt for.
