Purpose
The current default of soil albedo based on CLM soil color maps overestimate desert albedos by 20-45% compared to CERES satellite observations, leading to regional errors of 10-25 W/m² in upwelling shortwave fluxes.
This is a simple attempt to (a) correct the mean bias, and (b) relate albedo variations to variations in soil properties. The model is a placeholder, fit to CERES albedo over desert regions. We should improve upon it. For example, we may include additional predictors such as porosity, and/or change the model structure.
