This is the OG distribution of NeWS 1.1, coming from the archives of Don Hopkins.

I integrated the missing stuff from the BitSavers dist for 68k, since it has pristine clientsrc, missing photos/files, and 68k binaries for convenience (so you'll need just one distribution).

"bak" contains the stuff I saved from his distribution.

There are little differences compared to the "original thing":

• psterm and other applications are different (probably the Grasshopper Group patches). If you build the terminal from the included sources, it will be an older (and more awful) version, so build it from the SUG NeWS applications distribution (or the clientsrc from "bak").
• the lib/NeWS/*.ps have more things and customizations that suited his needs.
• repeat.ps was corrupted, has been reinstated.
• the source code has little patches to support CG4 overlay plane (made by him)
• acceptconnect() is missing, probably the *OSI are corrupted (his DumbOSI.c seems to be lost to time I guess).
• there are two more fonts: cursors and Gallant

The portable server REF source tree is missing. It should have the OS interface code for System V, 4.2BSD, DEC Ultrix and a portable version of Pixrect, including a driver for the VAXstation framebuffer.

Beware that the sources (both client and server) won't build as they are. In the best case you'll have to comment "TARGET_ARCH" in the makefiles, in the worst case you'll have to figure out yourself.

And if you'd like to port the server, well, that's a really hard task, especially if you're thinking about porting it to Linux... Ic sunt dracones... ;)

Disclaimer: the copyright status is still unknown since it's abandonware, all the rights are reserved to their respective owners (and there is no Adobe code, being a clean room implementation from Sun Microsystems). This repo is here just for archival purposes.
