Summary

  • Points github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-collector-contrib/pkg/datadog at songy23/opentelemetry-service-contrib@07780dd, a cherry-pick of open-telemetry/opentelemetry-collector-contrib#49957 (fixes WithAPIConfig being silently overridden by DD_API_KEY/DD_SITE env vars — the root cause behind incident-58405's otel-agent 403s).
  • Base commit note: the fix was cherry-picked onto 03d2fb4a4514 (the exact commit 7.82.x and main already pin pkg/datadog to today) rather than onto the v0.155.0 tag. v0.155.0 predates an upstream pkg/config/create.NewConfig signature change that 03d2fb4a4514 already carries; building directly against v0.155.0 fails with too many arguments in call to pkgconfigcreate.NewConfig. Verified dda inv otel-agent.build succeeds against this corrected base.

Test plan

  • dda inv tidy — clean 16-file diff (8 go.mod + 8 go.sum), no unrelated churn
  • dda inv otel-agent.build — builds successfully
  • Deploy to a staging otel-agent and confirm the 403 API-key repro from incident-58405 is resolved

…n 7.82.x

Replaces github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-collector-contrib/pkg/datadog
with github.com/songy23/opentelemetry-service-contrib/pkg/datadog @ 07780dd12df3
(open-telemetry/opentelemetry-collector-contrib#49957 cherry-picked onto the
same base commit 7.82.x already pins to), which fixes WithAPIConfig being
silently overridden by DD_API_KEY/DD_SITE env vars.

7.82.x uses an older OTel collector version than main, so this validates the
fix against that base directly rather than against main's newer pin. Note:
PR #49957 was cherry-picked onto 03d2fb4a4514 (7.82.x/main's existing pin)
rather than onto the v0.155.0 tag, because v0.155.0 predates a pkg/config/create.NewConfig
signature change that 03d2fb4a4514 already carries — building against v0.155.0
directly fails with "too many arguments in call to pkgconfigcreate.NewConfig".

Used to validate the fix against the incident-58405 403 API key repro in a
staging deploy.

Explanation

Confidence level: 90.00%
Effect size tolerance: |Δ mean %| ≥ 5.00%

Performance changes are noted in the perf column of each table:

  • ✅ = significantly better comparison variant performance
  • ❌ = significantly worse comparison variant performance
  • ➖ = no significant change in performance

A regression test is an A/B test of target performance in a repeatable rig, where "performance" is measured as "comparison variant minus baseline variant" for an optimization goal (e.g., ingress throughput). Due to intrinsic variability in measuring that goal, we can only estimate its mean value for each experiment; we report uncertainty in that value as a 90.00% confidence interval denoted "Δ mean % CI".

For each experiment, we decide whether a change in performance is a "regression" -- a change worth investigating further -- if all of the following criteria are true:

  1. Its estimated |Δ mean %| ≥ 5.00%, indicating the change is big enough to merit a closer look.

  2. Its 90.00% confidence interval "Δ mean % CI" does not contain zero, indicating that if our statistical model is accurate, there is at least a 90.00% chance there is a difference in performance between baseline and comparison variants.

  3. Its configuration does not mark it "erratic".

Replicate Execution Details

We run multiple replicates for each experiment/variant. However, we allow replicates to be automatically retried if there are any failures, up to 8 times, at which point the replicate is marked dead and we are unable to run analysis for the entire experiment. We call each of these attempts at running replicates a replicate execution. This section lists all replicate executions that failed due to the target crashing or being oom killed.

Note: In the below tables we bucket failures by experiment, variant, and failure type. For each of these buckets we list out the replicate indexes that failed with an annotation signifying how many times said replicate failed with the given failure mode. In the below example the baseline variant of the experiment named experiment_with_failures had two replicates that failed by oom kills. Replicate 0, which failed 8 executions, and replicate 1 which failed 6 executions, all with the same failure mode.
