bgzf-filehandle is not as bad as cram (which does stat on any check) but it does attempt to call stat once it's close to the end of the file.
it seems like this shouldn't be required...index should tell us where the end is but would have to a) check "spec" and/or b) investigate whether we can get a tests passing without stat
