Gitg

Download on Flathub

gitg is a graphical user interface for git. It aims at being a small, fast and convenient tool to visualize the history of git repositories. Besides visualization, gitg also provides several utilities to manage your repository and commit your work.

The latest version of gitg is 44.

Installing gitg

To install the latest version of gitg, make sure to download gitg-44.tar.xz from the download site. After downloading the following procedure installs gitg:

$ tar Jxf gitg-44.tar.xz
$ cd gitg-44
$ meson --prefix=/usr build
$ ninja -C build
$ sudo ninja -C build install

Building gitg from git

The gitg repository is hosted on gitlab.gnome.org. To build from git:

$ git clone https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gitg.git
$ cd gitg
$ meson --prefix=/usr build
$ ninja -C build
$ sudo ninja -C build install

Alternatively you can build using Flatpak with the org.gnome.gitgDevel.json manifest.

Using gitg

When gitg is installed, you can run gitg from the GNOME menu, or from a terminal by issueing: 'gitg'. Type 'gitg --help' to show the options you can specify on the command line.

Use of Generative AI

Adopted from Loupe [discussion]

This project does not allow contributions generated by large languages models (LLMs) and chatbots. This ban includes tools like ChatGPT, Ollama, Claude, Copilot, DeepSeek, and Devin AI. We are taking these steps as precaution due to the potential negative influence of AI generated content on quality, as well as likely copyright violations.

This ban of AI generated content applies to all parts of the projects, including, but not limited to, code, documentation, issues, and artworks. An exception applies for purely translating texts for issues and comments to English.

AI tools can be used to answer questions and find information. However, we encourage contributors to avoid them in favor of using existing documentation and our chats and forums. Since AI generated information is frequently misleading or false, we cannot supply support on anything referencing AI output.
