Request for release with 3.14 wheels on pypi

The latest release on pypi has python 3.13 but no 3.14 wheels:

#1335 added 3.14 testing.

When would a release with 3.14 wheels be possible? I ask so that downstream projects can start testing/supporting 3.14.

We don't typically push our release schedule to match python's versions. But you can already start testing downstream projects by compiling from source. (pip install galsim should already work on 3.14 systems.) Or wait until conda does their release if you want binaries, which will probably be in the next few weeks.

Will that release also be on pypi or only conda? If so a few weeks sounds good.

Conda usually goes through all their packages in more or less dependency order and releases binaries for the new python version. Once all of GalSim's dependencies have conda releases, then it will do GalSim. It's all automatic I believe unless there are any problems.
The pypi wheel will be done when we do our next release version. But there aren't currently any plans to do that. If it's a blocker for you, we could consider it, but we usually just add the new python version whenever we have a normal release.

Is there any update on this? The lack of 3.14 support means that romancal (via romanisim) is unable to support 3.14.

Why the urgency to support 3.14? Are there new features there that you need for romanisim?

By default new users (or existing users that create new environments) will likely end up with a 3.14 environment (if they for example run conda create ...). When they attempt to install romancal/romanisim/etc they will be unable to install a working version.

Is there anything I can do to help with a 3.14 release?

The next romancal release starts on January 15th it would be great if we could have 3.14 tested and supported prior to that point (which will require testing and release of romanisim after 3.14 is supported by GalSim).

If you're using conda, then you're already good. They updated the galsim feedstock to support 3.14 months ago.

Unfortunately that is only a portion of the community.

Is there a plan to make a pypi release? We will need this to make a pypi wheels for romanisim and romancal.

I don't think that's true. The wheel is a convenience, not a requirement. You should be able to build galsim from source in a pip context. But regardless, yes, there will be a pypi wheel built when we make the next release. So if you want that, you need to be patient.

Thanks. Unfortunately our build system is unable to build galsim from source (and neither am I on my local system).

I do not mean to come across as impatient. I appreciate you fielding these questions and managing this package.

Is there a timeline for the next release? I would like to know so I can gauge if we should aim to support 3.14 in the next romancal release. I understand if the answer is "there is no timeline" and even that information will be helpful is determining what we do on our end.

There is not specific timeline currently, but I would guess probably sometime in the next month.
