Reject unsupported XPath axes before restoring the auto-optional flag.
isSimplePath does not check axes, and the CST visitor drops explicit axis information. Therefore ancestor::x and descendant::x can pass its checks. When an optional field’s sole selector matches the guard expression, auto-detection can mark that guard as auto-optional. Preserve the existing .. parent-step case.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
I see a refactoring need here - these 2 method invocations on WrapperAutoDetectionService are basically post-processors of deserialize(). Currently the callers (ImportMappingFileDropdownItem and datamapper.provider) have to know which post-processors to invoke individually, making tight couplings between component, provider, deserializer and post-processors.
We should move this invocation into deserialize(), so deserialize() invokes these 2 methods as post-processors. Probably introduce postDeserialize() private method that invokes these 2 methods in MappingSerializerService, then let deserialize() invoke it. Then when the next post-deserialize addition comes in, we only need to update postDeserialize().

This method is doing two unrelated jobs, and the second one is in the wrong place.
- Auto if wrapping when engaging a mapping
- Demotion check
Demotion check is a reaction to the XPath expression changing. It should rather happen inside MappingService.updateExpression().

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Remove a mapping when any operand references a removed parameter.
hasStaleSourceDocument now removes a mapping only when every extracted path belongs to the removed document. This rule is not safe for DocumentType.PARAM. Removing a parameter also removes its xsl:param declaration, because populateParam iterates sourceParameterMap.
Example trigger: a mapping uses $Account/Name | /ShipOrder/Name or concat($Account/Name, /ShipOrder/Name), and the user removes the Account parameter. The mapping is kept with a reference to $Account, which is no longer declared. The generated stylesheet then fails XSLT static compilation with an undeclared variable error (XPST0008). The "still-valid half" that the comment protects is part of an expression that can no longer compile.
For the body document, the every rule is acceptable, because an unresolved absolute path only evaluates to empty. Keep every for SOURCE_BODY and use some for PARAM. Alternatively, remove only the stale operand.

Finally, modelling union operands made every operand visible to stale-mapping cleanup, which then dropped an entire multi-source expression when just one of its source documents was detached — taking the still-valid half with it. Only a mapping whose every referenced path has gone stale is removed now. Pruning the dead operand out of the expression would be better still and needs an inverse of XPathService.addSource; that is left for later.

@igarashitm Thanks for the clarification. Preserving the remaining source mappings makes sense, and I understand that operand pruning is deferred.
The finding concerns parameter removal specifically. If removing Account also removes its xsl:param declaration, retaining $Account/Name | /ShipOrder/Name leaves an undeclared variable reference. The remaining operand cannot prevent that static compilation error.
I recommend checking the serialized XSLT after detaching Account from this mixed-source mapping. Preserving the expression requires either pruning $Account references or retaining a declaration.
Would you like a follow-up issue for stale-operand pruning?

Learning: In KaotoIO/kaoto, packages/ui/src/services/mapping/mapping.service.ts intentionally preserves multi-source XPath expressions during stale-mapping cleanup when at least one referenced source remains valid. The maintainers defer pruning stale operands until an inverse of XPathService.addSource is available. Distinguish this preservation policy from the separate risk of retaining references to removed xsl:param declarations.

Resolves: [KaotoIO#3634](KaotoIO#3634) When both the source and target fields of a mapping are optional (minOccurs=0), MappingService.tryAutoOptionalIfWrap now wraps the mapping with an IfItem whose test matches the source path, so the target element is only produced when the source is present. The new IfItem is tagged IfItem.isAutoOptionalIf and renders as a regular, visible `if` node in this change — the UX polish that hides it is a follow-up. Also: - MappingActionService's field/container-mapping call sites now call tryAutoOptionalIfWrap after mapping a source onto a target, folding the result into the returned structural/targetWasUnmapped flags. - WrapperAutoDetectionService.autoDetectOptionalGuards restores the isAutoOptionalIf flag after XSLT deserialization, since the flag itself isn't serialized. - MappingService.deleteMappingItem/deleteFromParent now cascade-delete an auto-optional guard once its sole mapped field is removed. - CopyOfSelectorHandler reconstructs the intermediate FieldItem when a CONTAINER copy-of is deserialized directly inside an xsl:if. - XPathService.isSimplePath checks whether an XPath expression is a bare field reference, used to validate the guard's shape.
…drag-drop Whether an auto-optional xsl:if is see-through depends on the mapping under it still being a plain 1-to-1 field reference. That question was being re-asked inside tryAutoOptionalIfWrap, which only runs when a mapping is engaged, so a guard went stale the moment the user edited the expression by hand — in the inline XPath field, in the Monaco editor, or by dropping a function onto it. Re-checking now hangs off a generic "the expression changed" event that every writer announces, and applies the same rule load-time detection applies, so a guard cannot mean one thing in-session and another after a reload. Creating a guard was likewise too eager: nothing checked that the field's mapping actually came from the source being guarded. Dropping an optional source onto a field already mapped from a required one produced an xsl:if that gated the first source's output on the second source's presence. Deciding whether to guard, and whether the guard is see-through, now lives next to the code that recognises one again after a round trip, so the two cannot drift. The remaining three changes remove seams that let callers fall out of step. The two auto-detection passes are post-processors of deserialize(), so deserialize() runs them itself rather than relying on each caller to remember — which also stops wrapper detection registering namespace prefixes on a map that restoreNamespaces had already replaced, losing them before serialization. The same applies to the XSLT output settings: deserialize() returns them sanitised for the target type, and the debug importer now adopts them instead of discarding them and immediately overwriting the imported file's omit-xml-declaration with the session's own. Finally, isSimplePath needed to tell "/a" from "/a | /b" but the XPath syntaxtree had no node for union, intersect or except, so it reached around the model into the raw CST. The model is maintained enrich-when-needed, and the absence was not harmless: the visitor kept only the first operand of a combination, so the second was invisible to field-path extraction and never got a connection line on the canvas. Modelling it fixes the dropped operand and lets the workaround go. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…Path Track each step's axis in StepExprNode and treat a step as "simple" only when its axis is implicit, child, or attribute, and any reverse step is a parent reference — rejecting ancestor::, descendant::, following-sibling::, etc.
Wrapping an optional mapping in an auto-optional xsl:if puts an instruction between a container field and its children, and a good deal of code reads children directly on the assumption that what it finds there is the whole story. That assumption now fails in four places, each with a silent symptom: a container next to a copy-of was elided and its guarded co the grandparent; "Delete mapping" matched no branch and did nothing at all; a re-drop left the container's wholesale copy-of in place s copied the subtree and emitted the child; and the empty-ancestor cleanup gave up at the guard, leaving a stray empty element behind. Ra four separately, this adds the two walks that were missing — one up to the owning container, one asking whether a subtree contribute routes the callers through them, so the next wrapper interposed here doesn't reopen the same set of bugs. The cascade-delete of an emptied guard is deliberately re something the original change offered on purpose. It can't be done safely: isAutoOptionalIf isn't serialized, so on load every shape flagged, including a presence check the user wrote by hand — and the cascade would then delete it with no prompt and no undo. The mapp removed and an emptied field is still cleaned up through the guard; only the xsl:if itself survives, staying visible and removable. Dropping a second source onto a guarded field now removes names a single source, so once the selector carries two the element was suppressed whenever the first was absent, even though the output the user never asked for and had no way to see. A guard whose test the user has edited is left alone. Two attribute problems, both of which make Kaoto disagree what an attribute is. Guarded attributes stopped being hoisted ahead of element content, because two instructions compared equal ordering rule; the generated stylesheet then failed at transform time with XTDE0410. Separately, the explicit attribute::name axis r of that name, so a path the simple-path check accepts could not be matched against the schema. Both predate this branch but only bit attributes get wrapped. Finally, modelling union operands made every operand visible to stale-mapping cleanup, which then dropped an entire multi-source expres its source documents was detached — taking the still-valid half with it. Only a mapping whose every referenced path has gone stale is r the dead operand out of the expression would be better still and needs an inverse of XPathService.addSource; that's left for later.
