fix(vscode): stop the .kaoto metadata lookup at the workspace root - #4254
The .kaoto metadata lookup in the VS Code extension walked up to the filesystem root:
A .kaoto file in the home directory was found for every project below it, so no new file was created in the workspace and the metadata of different projects got mixed.
Without a workspace, the file to create was placed at a wrong location (path.basename returned only a folder name).
Changes
findExistingKaotoMetadataFile stops at the workspace folder. The boundary is decided by vscode.workspace.getWorkspaceFolder(), so it also works on case-insensitive file systems and with Windows drive letter casing.
Outside a workspace folder nothing is looked up, and findKaotoMetadataToCreate throws instead of creating a .kaoto file at a wrong location. setMetadata therefore fails with a clear error for a route outside a workspace.
Add tests for both lookups, including a .kaoto above the workspace root that must be ignored.
An existing ~/.kaoto is now ignored and left untouched. New metadata goes to the .kaoto in the workspace root.
AI disclosure: the change and tests were prepared with IBM Bob and reviewed by the author.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Metadata lookup searches from the edited route up to the workspace boundary and uses the nearest matching file. A workspace-level metadata file takes precedence over one in a parent directory.
Routes outside a workspace return no metadata, and lookup does not search beyond the workspace.
New metadata files are created at the workspace root. Creating one for a route outside a workspace returns an error.
Metadata lookup returns no result when locating, reading, or parsing the file fails.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Metadata lookup now stays within the edited route’s workspace. Creation targets the workspace root and throws an error when the route is outside a workspace. Tests cover lookup and creation behavior.

Explanation
Issue [#4256] requires workspace-bounded lookup, workspace-root creation, and no lookup or creation outside a workspace. findExistingKaotoMetadataFile uses getWorkspaceFolder() as the boundary and continues only for FileNotFound. findKaotoMetadataToCreate returns the workspace-root .kaoto URI and throws outside a workspace. The new tests cover parent-directory files, nearest-file selection, workspace-root creation, and outside-workspace behavior.

Explanation
The changes remain within the metadata lookup behavior in [#4256]. The added error handling preserves caller behavior when lookup now propagates non-FileNotFound filesystem errors. The added tests support the requested lookup and creation behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Stop lookup at the workspace root when path casing differs.
On a case-insensitive filesystem, VS Code can associate a route with a workspace folder even when their URI paths use different casing. The exact folder === workspaceFolderPath comparison then never matches. If the workspace has no .kaoto, lookup continues above its root and can read or update a parent .kaoto through getMetadata or setMetadata. Compare the boundary using workspace-aware path semantics before checking another parent. VS Code 1.100.0 uses case-aware filesystem capabilities for workspace-folder matching. Keep the workspace URI when creating .kaoto.
The extension supports limited virtual workspaces, and the custom editor registration does not exclude non-file: resources. When such a route has no existing metadata file, setMetadata reaches this creation path. vscode.Uri.file(...) then discards the workspace URI’s scheme and authority. Use vscode.Uri.joinPath(...) instead.

Stop lookup when stat fails for another reason.
If stat cannot check a nearer .kaoto, this catch logs the error and continues upward. setMetadata can then write to a different .kaoto file, or create one at the workspace root, instead of reporting the failure. Continue only for FileNotFound; propagate other errors. VS Code defines errors such as NoPermissions and Unavailable separately from FileNotFound. (code.visualstudio.com)

Preserve the virtual-workspace URI in the metadata fallback.
When the classpath read fails, the fallback can find a virtual .kaoto file but then converts its path to a file: URI. This can read unrelated local content or fail instead of reading from the virtual workspace.
