CE400/500 Final Project: Data Center Sustainability & Energy Efficiency

Overview

This repository contains the final project for CE400 and CE500 courses, focusing on sustainable systems engineering for modern data centers. The project investigates the energy consumption patterns of data centers and proposes optimization frameworks to improve their sustainability.

Project Description

Motivation

Data centers have become essential infrastructure components in the modern digital era, supporting:

  • Cloud computing services
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning
  • Large-scale data storage
  • Critical digital services

However, data centers are significant energy consumers, with electricity costs and environmental impacts representing major operational challenges. This project addresses:

  1. Energy Consumption Issues: Data centers consume substantial amounts of electricity, with individual components contributing unequally to overall power usage
  2. Sustainability Limitations: Current metrics like PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) are insufficient for comprehensive sustainability assessment
  3. Holistic Solutions: Need for integrated approaches combining software, hardware, infrastructure, and energy sourcing strategies

Relevance

This project directly supports multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by addressing:

  • Energy consumption patterns
  • Environmental impacts of data center operations
  • Sustainable infrastructure development

Methodology

The project employs two primary approaches:

1. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

  • Comprehensive evaluation of data center operations from a life cycle perspective
  • Identification of key environmental hotspots
  • Integration of environmental impact considerations with operational metrics

2. Multi-Objective Optimization Framework

  • Analysis of trade-offs between:
    • Performance
    • Cost
    • Sustainability
    • Energy consumption
  • Development of optimization strategies considering multiple competing objectives

Expected Outcomes

The LCA and LCIA (Life Cycle Impact Assessment) are expected to:

  • Identify key environmental hotspots in data center operations
  • Highlight operational electricity consumption as a primary focus area
  • Guide development of targeted sustainability improvements
  • Provide data-driven insights for infrastructure optimization

Building the Document

This project uses LaTeX for document preparation. To compile:

pdflatex main.tex
bibtex main
pdflatex main.tex
pdflatex main.tex

Or using a LaTeX IDE (Overleaf, TeXShop, etc.):

  1. Open main.tex
  2. Include ref.bib bibliography file
  3. Compile to PDF
