Count rows of in-memory frames in cudf-polars without materializing them - #24246
Part of #24112. This fixes the in-memory executor and the overflow behavior, but the issue's streaming variants still xfail, so it doesn't close it.
Select(len()) over an in-memory DataFrameScan, including behind Cache nodes, returns the polars frame's height instead of copying the frame to the GPU.
Streaming lowering does the same for frames with more rows than cudf::size_type can hold. Those cannot be materialized and currently crash the worker.
Adds OverflowCheckedCast, emitted only for polars' col("len").cast(UInt128).sum().strict_cast(idx) rewrite, so an overflowing count raises InvalidOperationError like CPU polars instead of wrapping. It is backed by an opt-in Column.astype(check_overflow=True), and default casts are unchanged.
Un-xfails test_projection_pushdown_union_len_pushdown_28657 on the in-memory engine. The streaming variants move from skip to expected failure, because the correct error is raised inside an ExceptionGroup, as for other tests in that registry.
Notes for reviewers
The fast path skips do_evaluate, so profile/NVTX rows for those nodes are omitted, as for the existing parquet fast count.
The streaming fast count is deliberately limited to frames beyond size_type. For small frames it trips an existing failure when unioned branches with different counts share an Empty input (packed data cannot be empty). That already happens for parquet, e.g. concat([scan_a, scan_b]).select(pl.len()). Happy to follow up separately.
Polars < 1.43 doesn't push len() below the union, so the new plan-shape tests skip there.
Testing: the cudf-polars suite gives 20,993 passed against 20,973 on the base commit (the difference is the 20 new tests). The new tests pass on polars 1.35.2 to 1.44.2, and I checked that they fail without the change.
Select._len_frame now takes its dtype from the enclosing Cast instead of hard-coding UInt32, fixing wrong behavior under polars' bigidx feature. Fixes the same bug in the parquet fast-count branch, which now shares _len_frame instead of duplicating it.
Deduped the row-count limit: streaming/select.py now reuses the existing CUDF_ROW_LIMIT constant (previously only in streaming/actor_graph/utils.py) instead of a private copy. Moved it to streaming/base.py, the one place both modules can import it from without a circular import back through streaming.parallel.
Rewrote the streaming DataFrameScan/len() tests to be behavioral: a .collect() plus value check, and a test counting calls to DataFrameScan.do_evaluate (the one place this engine materializes a scan) to confirm the oversized branch is genuinely skipped, not just that the final count happens to come out right.
Added a direct-IR-construction test confirming the dtype fix, since polars' bigidx mode is fixed by which runtime package is installed and isn't swappable at runtime to test against directly.
Not addressed: whether the in-memory engine should also strip Cache nodes the way streaming does. That's a bigger design question than this PR's scope; happy to discuss separately if still wanted.
Testing:tests/test_dataframescan.py and tests/streaming/test_dataframescan.py pass in full, including the new tests. The full tests/streaming directory passes (2500+ passed) with no new failures beyond pre-existing, unrelated ones. Verified the CUDF_ROW_LIMIT relocation doesn't change behavior for join.py's existing (unmodified) usage of it.
Select(len()) over an in-memory DataFrameScan, including behind Cache
nodes, now returns the polars frame's height instead of copying the
frame to the GPU. In streaming lowering the same applies to frames with
more rows than cudf::size_type can hold, which cannot be materialized.
Add OverflowCheckedCast, emitted only for polars' rewrite of
concat(...).select(len()) (col("len").cast(UInt128).sum() narrowed back
to the index dtype), so an overflowing count raises InvalidOperationError
like CPU polars instead of wrapping. It is backed by an opt-in
Column.astype(check_overflow=True); default casts are unchanged.
Un-xfail test_projection_pushdown_union_len_pushdown_28657 for the
in-memory engine. The streaming variants no longer crash the worker and
become expected failures, since the correct error is raised inside an
ExceptionGroup.

Added optional overflow validation for integer conversions, reporting an error when values fall outside the destination type’s range.
Strict, non-wrapping narrowing conversions now check for overflow.
Improved len() performance for in-memory scans by calculating row counts without materializing scan data.
Improved handling of large row counts, including errors when counts exceed the index type’s capacity.
Unchecked narrowing conversions retain their existing wrapping behavior.
Tests
Expanded coverage for integer conversion boundaries, null and empty inputs, large row counts, and optimized length evaluation.
The change adds optional integer overflow checks to Column.astype and exposes OverflowCheckedCast. It adds len() fast paths for in-memory DataFrameScan nodes and uses checked narrowing for the recognized length rewrite.
Changes: Checked casts and DataFrameScan length evaluation
Column.astype accepts check_overflow and checks integer ranges when enabled. OverflowCheckedCast performs checked casts. Tests cover boundaries, nulls, empty inputs, widening casts, and unchecked wrapping.
DataFrameScan length fast paths python/cudf_polars/cudf_polars/dsl/ir.py, python/cudf_polars/tests/test_dataframescan.py
len() reads in-memory scan heights without evaluating eligible scans. The result uses the length expression dtype. Tests cover cache order, large counts, and dtype handling.
The recognized UInt128 length rewrite uses a checked cast. Streaming lowering uses in-memory frame heights above CUDF_ROW_LIMIT and accepts zero parquet counts. The affected tests are no longer skipped and are marked as expected failures for the streaming engine.
NVIDIA/cudf#24108: The change handles the UInt128 row-count rewrite and checked narrowing.
NVIDIA/cudf#24112: The change adds an in-memory DataFrameScan height fast path for len().
NVIDIA/cudf#24839: The change addresses wrapping for the len() aggregation narrowing path, not other overflow operations.
NVIDIA/cudf#24694: The change adds checked narrowing for the length cast path; other strict casts are not described as changed.

This must exist already somewhere...
If not, we should put it in one place in pylibcudf and use it from a bunch of places, so that when we parametrise the size_type in libcudf this is not out of date.

Can we make these behavioural tests, rather than introspective ones that are inappropriately intimate with the internals? (I know that there is bad precedent in this test suite, but let's not add more).

Preserve the enclosing cast semantics in the in-memory count fast path.
_is_len_expr accepts narrowing and non-strict Cast(Len) expressions, but _len_frame constructs the target-typed scalar directly. An out-of-range non-strict cast therefore raises OverflowError instead of returning null. An out-of-range strict cast also differs from the normal Cast path, which uses libcudf's wrapping behavior. Apply the enclosing cast's range and strictness semantics before constructing the scalar, or bypass this fast path for casts that it cannot represent.

Do not infer the concat-length rewrite from node names alone.
A user-owned len column can produce pl.col("len").cast(pl.UInt128).sum().cast(pl.UInt32). The matcher treats this plan as the synthetic concat(...).select(pl.len()) rewrite. It therefore narrows the sum to UInt64 and constructs OverflowCheckedCast; an overflowing value can raise InvalidOperationError instead of following the ordinary wrapping cast.
Carry explicit context from the concat-length rewrite to its nested cast and aggregate. Do not use only Agg.name or Column.name to select the UInt128 exception.

Preserve the enclosing cast semantics in the streaming fast-count path.
When an oversized DataFrameScan is selected with pl.len().cast(pl.Int32, strict=False), a count such as 2**31 + 1 is outside Int32. The current target-typed pl.Series uses strict construction by default, so it can raise instead of producing the null required by the enclosing non-strict cast. Apply the original cast to a wide count literal before creating LiteralColumn. This correction is separate from the _len_frame path in dsl/ir.py.
