This repository serves as a default fallback when a given make does not have its own signalset definitions. It contains general information about Rolls-Royce vehicles and their signal configurations.

About Rolls-Royce

Rolls-Royce is a British luxury automobile manufacturer established in 1906 by Charles Rolls and Henry Royce. The company is renowned for creating handcrafted luxury vehicles that epitomize excellence, sophistication, and British craftsmanship. Throughout its history, Rolls-Royce has maintained a reputation for engineering precision and luxury unmatched by most other automotive brands.

Generations

Early Period (1906-1939)

The early period of Rolls-Royce established the brand's reputation for engineering excellence. Key models included:

  • Silver Ghost (1907-1925): Known as "the best car in the world," the Silver Ghost established Rolls-Royce's reputation for reliability and quality.
  • Phantom I (1925-1929): Succeeded the Silver Ghost, featuring a new 7.7L six-cylinder engine with pushrod-operated overhead valves.
  • Phantom II & III (1929-1939): Continued refinement of the Phantom line, with the Phantom III introducing a V12 engine.

Post-War Period (1946-1971)

Following World War II, Rolls-Royce continued producing luxury vehicles while adapting to changing market conditions:

  • Silver Dawn (1949-1955): First Rolls-Royce to offer a factory-built standard steel body.
  • Silver Cloud (1955-1966): Offered in three series with progressive improvements and engine options.
  • Phantom V & VI (1959-1991): Large, stately limousines primarily used for official state occasions and by royalty.

Modern Rolls-Royce (1971-2003)

During this period, Rolls-Royce faced financial challenges, changed ownership several times, and shared platforms with Bentley:

  • Silver Shadow (1965-1980): Featured unibody construction, hydraulic self-leveling suspension, and disc brakes.
  • Silver Spirit/Silver Spur (1980-1998): More modern styling with improved ride quality and handling.
  • Silver Seraph (1998-2002): The last Rolls-Royce developed under Vickers ownership, featuring a BMW V12 engine.

BMW Era (2003-Present)

After BMW acquired the rights to the Rolls-Royce name and logo in 1998, a new chapter began with the opening of a new manufacturing facility at Goodwood, England:

  • Phantom VII (2003-2017): The first model developed under BMW ownership, reestablishing Rolls-Royce's pinnacle position in the luxury market.
  • Ghost (2010-Present): A slightly smaller and more driver-oriented model, now in its second generation.
  • Wraith (2013-2023): A luxury coupé based on the Ghost platform.
  • Dawn (2015-2023): A luxury convertible sharing architecture with the Wraith.
  • Cullinan (2018-Present): The brand's first SUV, named after the largest diamond ever discovered.
  • Phantom VIII (2017-Present): The current flagship model, built on an all-new aluminum spaceframe architecture called "Architecture of Luxury."
  • Spectre (2023-Present): The first all-electric Rolls-Royce production model.
