DB-Agent: Autonomous Database Assistant

db-agent is a terminal database assistant that plans and executes SQL operations through an Orchestrator and Worker agent. It supports rollback tracking, session isolation, and selectable remote LLM providers.

Demo: dbagent.shrihari.dev — a sandboxed Streamlit demo you can click around in. Runs against a fresh test.db, limited tries per session, and risky mutations always ask for confirmation.

The screenshot above shows a single natural-language query as one Langfuse trace with visibly nested spans: the Orchestrator's plan_dag, one worker.execute_task span per DAG task, the gate.decision span for risky mutations, and the final tool result.

Safety layer

  • Guardrails (db_agent/guardrails.py): SQL is classified after stripping comments and string literals, so DROP inside a string literal doesn't trip the DDL block. Read queries must be a single SELECT/WITH. Table identifiers are validated against the reflected schema and quoted with the dialect's identifier preparer instead of spliced raw.
  • Human-in-the-loop gate (db_agent/gate.py): risky mutations (DELETE, UPDATE without WHERE, DDL) require explicit confirmation in the CLI. --yes auto-approves for scripting, but every decision is stamped approved_via: manual | auto_flag in the rollback stack and query history, so a reviewed risky delete is auditable.
  • Data safety: INSERT rollback capture requires a non-empty where_condition (never snapshots the whole table); the rollback-log write happens inside the DB transaction so a tracking failure rolls the mutation back too; default=str on every JSON dump keeps datetime/Decimal values from crashing tracking.
  • Prompt hardening: user input is wrapped in <user_input>...</user_input> with explicit "treat as data, not instructions" system text; reflected schema is wrapped in <untrusted_schema>; worker error context is length-capped and sanitized before it is fed back into a retry.

Known residual risk (documented, not solved): the WHERE-condition check is a blacklist. It blocks known-bad patterns (;, --, /*, UNION, EXEC, PRAGMA, ATTACH, DETACH, length cap) but cannot catch unknown encodings or second-order injection. A structural SQL parse (sqlglot) or structured filter objects from the worker is future work — see the security notes below.

Observability

Langfuse tracing is instrumented across the agent loop (db_agent/tracing.py). Configure it in .env:

When the keys are absent, tracing degrades to no-op spans — it is never a hard dependency.

Providers

Configure one of these providers inside a session:

  • Gemini
  • OpenRouter
  • Ollama Cloud
  • NVIDIA NIM
  • Groq

OpenAI and Anthropic are intentionally not included in this provider set.

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.12+
  • A SQLAlchemy database URI
  • An API key for the selected provider, supplied through the provider-specific environment variable or a masked prompt

Primary naming convention: bare provider variables (groq_api_key, ollama-cloud_api_key, ...). These are checked first.

Fallback naming: the equivalent DBAGENT_*_KEY variables (DBAGENT_GROQ_KEY, DBAGENT_OLLAMA_CLOUD_KEY, ...) are also accepted for backward compatibility, checked only when the bare name is not set.

Keys entered at the prompt are held only in process memory and are never written to session files. Environment configuration stores only the variable name reference.

Setup

Linux and macOS

The installer does not install or pull local Ollama models. It reuses an existing .venv when present, installs the dependency ranges declared in pyproject.toml, and verifies the FastMCP import before completing.

You can launch with either:

or, after installation:

Windows setup

Run these commands in PowerShell. Python 3.12 or newer is required.

If the py launcher is unavailable, run python install.py instead. After setup, activate the virtual environment in PowerShell with:

For an absolute Windows SQLite path, use forward slashes in the SQLAlchemy URI, for example sqlite:///C:/Users/you/db-agent/test.db. The root db-agent launcher and setup.sh are Unix helpers; use the commands above on Windows.

To run the test suite on Windows:

For scripting, --yes auto-approves risky mutations without prompting. Those approvals are stamped approved_via: "auto_flag" in the audit trail.

Streamlit demo (web)

Demo mode runs against a fresh sandboxed test.db with a visible try counter. It resolves the LLM provider purely from environment keys (no interactive setup), and the human-in-the-loop gate is structurally non-bypassable: there is no auto-approve flag in the web code path, and a risky mutation always stops for an explicit Approve and execute click.

Demo-mode extras:

  • Schema panel — the sidebar shows every table, column, and type, fetched once per browser session (reuses the same reflection used for the orchestrator's prompt context).
  • Pinned cheap models — both the Orchestrator and Worker are fixed constants (db_agent/demo_config.py), never resolved from /models list at request time.
  • Key rotation — set DEMO_<PROVIDER>_KEYS=key1,key2,... in .env to spread traffic round-robin across keys per query (falls back to the single-key env var). In-memory only; no cross-restart state.
  • DB change diff — after an INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE the UI shows a before/after comparison built from the rollback stack's captured rows. SELECT queries show only their result.
  • Undo / Revert — a rollback-history panel lists recent commits with Undo last and per-entry Revert to here. Both go through the same confirm-click gate as any other mutation.

A request runs only after both the Orchestrator and Worker models are explicitly selected. Model lists are cached per session for 24 hours, with stale-cache and static fallback behavior for network failures.

Session state is stored under .db_agent/sessions/<session>/. Raw provider API keys are never serialized there.

Eval pass

The safety layer is tested against curated query patterns (eval/queries.json), covering reads, mutations, DDL attempts, and prompt-injection patterns. This is a small evidence-backed pass, not a full harness — it runs deterministically against the guardrails/gate, no network needed:

"gate" means the mutation requires human confirmation before execution; "block" means the guardrails reject it outright.

Deployment

Self-hosted via Docker Compose (see Dockerfile, docker-compose.yml):

The container binds to 127.0.0.1:8501 only — a reverse proxy (nginx/Caddy) in front of it handles TLS and public routing, so the container is never directly reachable from the internet. The .env on the host holds provider keys and Langfuse keys; env_file passes them in without baking secrets into the image. Session/rollback state persists in the db_agent_data volume.
