Backend Changes Documentation

Overview

This document outlines the recent changes made to the Payyr backend smart contracts, focusing on gas optimization improvements and configuration updates.

Changes Made

1. EmployeeRegistry.sol - Gas Optimization Improvements

New State Variable

• Added totalMonthlyPayroll state variable to track cumulative payroll costs without expensive loops

Function Updates

addEmployee()

• Added totalMonthlyPayroll += _salary to maintain global payroll cost
• Improved name validation logic (removed redundant checks)
• Added comments explaining validation improvements

updateEmployee()

• Added global payroll cost recalculation: totalMonthlyPayroll = (totalMonthlyPayroll - employees[_employee].salary) + _salary
• Used storage pointer for gas optimization

deactivateEmployee()

• Added totalMonthlyPayroll -= employees[_employee].salary to remove deactivated employee from global cost

activateEmployee()

• Added totalMonthlyPayroll += emp.salary to add reactivated employee back to global cost
• Used storage pointer for gas efficiency

getTotalMonthlyCost()

• Major Optimization: Replaced expensive loop with simple return statement
• Before: Iterated through all employee addresses to calculate active payroll
• After: Returns totalMonthlyPayroll directly
• Gas Savings: Significant reduction in gas costs for payroll calculations

2. Configuration Updates

foundry.toml

• Added OpenZeppelin remapping: @openzeppelin/contracts/=lib/openzeppelin-contracts/contracts/
• Enables cleaner import statements using OpenZeppelin contracts

Dependencies

• Updated OpenZeppelin contracts submodule
• Updated foundry.lock with latest dependency versions

Benefits

Gas Optimization

1. Eliminated Expensive Loops: getTotalMonthlyCost() no longer requires iteration through all employees
2. Storage Optimization: Used storage pointers in functions that modify employee data
