ObjectFIFO Feature Analysis & New Proposed Features

#3039 contained some options for how to improve the objectFIFO, but to be merged, we'd need to pull it apart into separate components and figure out exactly what issues proposed fixes solved. I'm creating this issue to draw attention to this PR and the outstanding work there.

That looks awesome, Erika! I'll take a deeper look later tonight, but what I saw at a glance looks really helpful. Thank you for pointing that out!

Also, since I have your attention for the moment, I'd like to say that I am nearing the end of a refactor (started concurrently with the lit work, but I wanted that out first) of the programming examples to convert them to cross-platform CMake. I hope I'm not stepping on anybody's toes by doing that. I'm getting pretty close to being done.

Great! I just wanted to let you know because I saw you are listed as in charge of "cohesive examples & build system" for the upcoming 1.4 milestone, and I didn't want to blind-side you. But perhaps I just misinterpreted the meaning of that.
