error out when websocket connection fails to upgrade (instead of silently returning a non-functioning socket)

Error out when websocket connection fails to upgrade (instead of silently returning a non-functioning socket). Also aliases the
ws://andwss://schemes tohttp://andhttps://, respectively (which seems to work with the existing system).
