MetUM-GOML

This page describes MetUM-GOML coupled model, which comprises the MetUM Global Atmosphere (GA) and Global Land (GL) coupled to the MC-KPP ocean mixed-layer model. Currently, MetUM-GOML works with GA scientific configurations GA1, GA2 and GA3. We recommend that you use MetUM-GOML with GA3, unless you have a very good reason otherwise. MetUM GA3, GL3 and MC-KPP version 1 define the MetUM-GOML1 coupled configuration.

Documentation

[wiki:MetUM-GOML/Documentation Documentation for MetUM-GOML] is available, including a guide to setting up and running simple simulations on the ARCHER supercomputer. The MetUM-GOML documentation also links to various MC-KPP documentation pages, to provide a guide to namelist options, ancillary files and output diagnostics from the MC-KPP ocean model. Please read through this documentation carefully before using MetUM-GOML.

Simulations and data

We have put together a list of [wiki:MetUM-GOML/SimulationList MetUM-GOML simulations] performed so far, from which data are available for analysis. If you are interested in analysing any of these simulations, please contact XXX. The [wiki:MetUM-GOML/SimulationList simulation list] is also useful for those running new simulations, as you may be able to copy and modify one of the existing simulations to suit your purposes, which will save you a considerable amount of time!

Authorship, citation and acknowledgement policy

If you use MetUM-GOML for a project, or include it in a proposal, we require that you abide by the following policies. The citation for Hirons et al. (2015), referenced below, that describes the MetUM-GOML model is:

Hirons LC, Klingaman NP and Woolnough SJ, 2015: MetUM-GOML1: A near-globally coupled atmosphere--ocean-mixed-layer model. Geosci. Model Dev., 8, 363-379, 2015. DOI: 10.5194/gmd-8-363-2015.

For proposals

Please contact XXX to discuss using MetUM-GOML in a research proposal. Contacting Nick as soon as possible ensures that he can provide timely advice on experiment design, supercomputing costs, disk space and whether any modifications to the MetUM-GOML model would be required to conduct your experiments.

In your proposal, we require that on first use of the MetUM-GOML name, you refer to the model as:

"the ocean mixed-layer coupled configuration of the Met Office Unified Model (MetUM-GOML; Hirons et al., 2015), comprising the MetUM Global Atmosphere and the Multi-Column K Profile Parameterisation ocean, which was assembled and is supported by the National Centre for Atmospheric Science."

For publications

  • Where Nick or Linda has provided assistance with experiment design, setup or analysis, you should include Nick or Linda as a minor author on your publications that result from those experiments. If you have taken MetUM-GOML "off the shelf" and used it without much input from us, then co-authorship is at your discretion. If this policy will create difficulties for you, please discuss this with us before you start your experiments.

  • In your publications, we require that on first use of the MetUM-GOML name, you refer to the model as:

"the ocean mixed-layer coupled configuration of the Met Office Unified Model (MetUM-GOML[V]; Hirons et al. 2015), comprising the MetUM Global Atmosphere [X.x] ([MetUM citation]) coupled to the Multi-Column K Profile Parameterisation ocean (MC-KPP, version [Y.y])." where [V] is the MetUM-GOML version you have used, [X.x] is the MetUM GA version you have used, [MetUM citation] is the MetUM description paper for GA [X.x] and [Y.y] is the MC-KPP version you have used. Contact us if you are unsure about any of these version numbers or references.

  • In the acknowledgements section of your publications, we require that you add:

"Assembly of MetUM-GOML and development of MC-KPP was supported by the National Centre for Atmospheric Science and led by Dr. Nicholas Klingaman."
