fixed operator precedence bug in setPosition() calls
At the same time, I refactored the leaf classes to use the new APIs in Java 21 FFM, this should have been done before. Nonetheless, this eliminated a lot of unnecessary code.

This 6.0.X_cherrypick_tgt is the result of a cherry-pick of the selected commits that are relevant to the fix to the setPosition() commands submitted by @pawel-wiejacha in PR #253 and in further fixes to that PR contained in PR #254.
