[HER Hack-Astron #6] Unit conversion under a 512-token reasoning budget

Small diagnostic case study using the original Spark-X2.5-1.7B checkpoint on a local CPU. This is not a standard benchmark or a representative estimate of general math ability.

All sixteen prespecified prompts were evaluated once with greedy decoding, thinking enabled and a 512-new-token budget. Exact numeric-and-unit accuracy: 9/16. Unparseable final answers: 7/16. Token-budget hits: 7/16. Both members correct: 4/8 pairs. Base-correct/distractor-incorrect pairs: 1/8.

Method and limits

Eight original problems cover length, volume, area, speed, mass and flow. Each is paired with an explicitly irrelevant fact about 17 stickers. Two problem families also have number-swapped variants. Rational reference values are calculated by the scoring script, not by the tested model. Dataset and code are MIT-licensed. All prompts, raw outputs and failures are retained.

The final response must contain one FINAL line with the correct rational number and unit. Standard full unit names and abbreviations are equivalent. Incorrect units, missing or ambiguous final lines, and unparseable values fail. Thinking must have explicitly closed before a FINAL line can count. A correct-looking FINAL line inside unfinished thinking is not a delivered answer.

Harness corrections are disclosed rather than hidden: the smoke test revealed that the initial parser rejected 'meters' despite its equivalence to 'm'; unit aliases were added before the full run, without changing the dataset. Full trace review then caught a boundary bug: two unfinished thinking blocks contained correct-looking FINAL lines and had been incorrectly counted. Scorer version 3 rejects them. The full-run accuracy changes from 11/16 to 9/16. Original outputs and initial scores remain in results.jsonl; scored-results.jsonl and scoring-corrections.json contain the corrected analysis. No inference was rerun or example excluded to make this correction. Smoke records are not part of the full-run metrics.

This tests short everyday arithmetic under one simple distractor. It does not establish broad robustness, absence of training contamination, long-context quality, competition-math ability or comparison with another model. Greedy CPU float32 evaluation differs from the model card's recommended sampling settings. Batching may introduce small floating-point differences from separate runs. Accuracy alone does not prove reasoning correctness. See the trace review below before interpreting the results.

Trace review

All sixteen raw traces were inspected. All nine completed final answers have correct displayed calculations. No wrong-reasoning/right-completed-answer example was observed in those nine. That is a result of this small corpus, not evidence that the model never produces one.

Seven cases reached the 512-token cap. Four never closed thinking: speed_base, speed_distractor, mass_distractor and speed_swap_distractor. Three entered the final response but were cut off before a complete FINAL number-and-unit line: area_base, area_distractor and speed_swap_base. Every capped case counts as a failure under the stated delivered-answer criterion, even when its earlier trace contains the correct arithmetic.

speed_base initially converts 18 km/h to 0.5 m/s and obtains 20 m. It notices disagreement with the hours-based calculation, corrects the conversion to 5 m/s, and then runs out of tokens. This is an arithmetic slip followed by self-correction, not evidence of a completed wrong answer. area_distractor correctly computes 80 cm times 25 cm equals 2000 cm2, but its final line is truncated to FINAL: 20. speed_swap_base computes 180 m correctly but ends at FINAL: 180, missing the unit. These failures demonstrate the importance of distinguishing knowledge in a trace from a complete answer under a budget.

The distractor adds one completion failure in the mass pair; it does not establish that irrelevant context harmed the arithmetic. Both traces compute 500 g correctly, but the longer distractor trace remains in thinking at the limit. Repeated deliberation about the requested FINAL format consumes substantial tokens in several examples. A future controlled study could compare a larger token budget or simpler output instruction on the same full corpus; neither was run here, so no improvement is claimed.

The first pair's full-batch raw outputs match the separate smoke outputs exactly. This limited check supports basic left-padding and batch consistency for that pair, not every possible prompt length or runtime.

The rendered prompt ends in an opening think tag. Raw output below includes any generated closing tag and the original end-of-sentence token. No completion is omitted.

We need to solve: A cable is 2.4 m long. You cut off 75 cm. How many meters remain? Show calculation briefly. End with exactly FINAL: <number> <unit>.

We need to compute remaining length in meters.

Given total length = 2.4 m. Cut off 75 cm. Convert 75 cm to meters: 75 cm = 0.75 m. So remaining = 2.4 m - 0.75 m = 1.65 m.

Thus answer: 1.65 meters.

But we need to show calculation briefly. Then end with exactly "FINAL: 1.65 meters". Ensure exactly that format.

We should output:

Calculation: 75 cm = 0.75 m; 2.4 m - 0.75 m = 1.65 m.

FINAL: 1.65 meters

But the instruction says "End with exactly FINAL: <number> <unit>." So we need to have that exact phrase at the end. Possibly include the number and unit as "1.65 meters". So final line: FINAL: 1.65 meters

Make sure no extra spaces? It says exactly "FINAL: <number> <unit>". So we can write "FINAL: 1.65 meters". That's fine.

We should also ensure the calculation is brief.

We need to solve: There are 17 green stickers, but that's irrelevant. A cable is 2.4 m long. You cut off 75 cm. How many meters remain? Show calculation briefly. End with exactly FINAL: <number> <unit>.

We need to compute remaining length after cutting off 75 cm from a 2.4 m cable.

First, convert 75 cm to meters: 75 cm = 0.75 m.

Then remaining length = 2.4 m - 0.75 m = 1.65 m.

So answer: 1.65 meters.

But we need to show calculation briefly. Then end with exactly "FINAL: 1.65 meters".

Make sure to include units.

Thus final output:

Calculation: 75 cm = 0.75 m; 2.4 m - 0.75 m = 1.65 m.

FINAL: 1.65 meters

But the instruction says "End with exactly FINAL: <number> <unit>." So we need to output exactly that line.

We should also ensure that the number is in meters. Possibly they want just the number and unit.

Thus final answer: FINAL: 1.65 meters

But we need to show calculation briefly. So we can write something like:

75 cm = 0.75 m; 2.4 m - 0.75 m = 1.65 m.

Then FINAL: 1.65 meters

Make sure it's exactly as required.

We need to solve: A jug contains 1.25 L. You pour out 350 mL. How many milliliters remain? Show calculation briefly. End with exactly FINAL: <number> <unit>.

We need to compute remaining volume. Initially 1.25 L. Convert to mL: 1.25 L = 1250 mL (since 1 L = 1000 mL). Then subtract 350 mL: 1250 - 350 = 900 mL. So answer is 900 mL.

But we need to show calculation briefly. Then end with exactly "FINAL: 900 mL". Ensure exactly that format.

Thus final output: calculation and then FINAL: 900 mL.

We should include the calculation: 1.25 L = 1250 mL; 1250 mL - 350 mL = 900 mL.

Then FINAL: 900 mL.

Make sure no extra text after FINAL.

We need to compute remaining volume after pouring out 350 mL from a jug containing 1.25 L.

First, convert 1.25 L to milliliters because the pour is in mL. 1 L = 1000 mL, so 1.25 L = 1.25 * 1000 = 1250 mL.

Then subtract 350 mL: 1250 - 350 = 900 mL.

So remaining is 900 mL.

We need to show calculation briefly. Then end with exactly "FINAL: 900 mL".

Make sure to include the calculation and then the final line.

Thus answer: 900 mL.

But the instruction: "End with exactly FINAL: <number> <unit>." So we need to output that exactly.

We should present the calculation and then the final line.

Let's write:

1.25 L = 1.25 × 1000 = 1250 mL.
2. Remaining = 1250 mL - 350 mL = 900 mL.

FINAL: 900 mL

A rectangular tile is 0.8 m long and 25 cm wide. What is its area in square centimeters? Show your calculation briefly. End with exactly FINAL: .

We need to compute area of rectangular tile: length = 0.8 m, width = 25 cm. Need area in square centimeters.

First convert everything to same unit. Since width is in cm, we can convert length to cm. 0.8 m = 0.8 * 100 cm = 80 cm. So length = 80 cm, width = 25 cm. Area = length * width = 80 cm * 25 cm = 2000 cm^2.

Alternatively, convert length to cm: 0.8 m = 80 cm, yes.

So area = 2000 cm^2.

Now we need to output: "FINAL: <number> <unit>". So "FINAL: 2000 cm^2". But ensure exactly that format: "FINAL: 2000 cm^2". Possibly they want just the number and unit without extra spaces? The instruction: "End with exactly FINAL: <number> <unit>." So we should output exactly "FINAL: 2000 cm^2". But note: they said "Show your calculation briefly." So we need to include calculation? The instruction: "A rectangular tile is 0.8 m long and 25 cm wide. What is its area in square centimeters? Show your calculation briefly. End with exactly FINAL: <number> <unit>." So we need to provide calculation and then final answer. But the final answer must be exactly "FINAL: 2000 cm^2". So we can write a brief calculation, then the final line.

Thus, I'll write something like:

Length = 0.8 m = 80 cm, width = 25 cm. Area = 80 cm * 25 cm = 2000 cm^2.

FINAL: 2000 cm^2

There are 17 green stickers on the storage shelf; the stickers do not affect the quantities in this problem. A rectangular tile is 0.8 m long and 25 cm wide. What is its area in square centimeters? Show your calculation briefly. End with exactly FINAL: .

We need to compute area of a rectangular tile: length = 0.8 m, width = 25 cm. Need area in square centimeters.

First convert everything to same units. Options: convert meters to centimeters, or convert cm to meters. Since width is in cm, we can convert length to cm.

1 m = 100 cm. So length = 0.8 m = 0.8 * 100 = 80 cm.

Width = 25 cm.

Area = length * width = 80 cm * 25 cm = 2000 cm^2.

Alternatively, convert width to meters: 25 cm = 0.25 m, length 0.8 m, area = 0.8 * 0.25 = 0.2 m^2. Then convert to cm^2: 1 m^2 = 10,000 cm^2, so 0.2 * 10,000 = 2000 cm^2.

So answer: 2000 cm^2.

Now we need to show calculation briefly and end with exactly "FINAL: <number> <unit>". So we should output something like:

Calculation: length = 0.8 m = 80 cm, width = 25 cm, area = 80 * 25 = 2000 cm^2.

FINAL: 2000 cm^2

But the instruction: "End with exactly FINAL: <number> <unit>." So we need to have that exact phrase at the end. Probably we should include the calculation before, then the final line.

Thus final answer:

Calculation: Convert length to cm: 0.8 m × 100 = 80 cm. Area = 80 cm × 25 cm = 2000 cm^2.

FINAL: 2000 cm^2

Make sure it's exactly as required.</think>Calculation: Convert length to cm: 0.8 m × 100 = 80 cm. Area = 80 cm × 25 cm = 2000 cm².

A cart moves at 18 km/h for 40 seconds. How many meters does it travel? Show your calculation briefly. End with exactly FINAL: .

We need to compute distance traveled by a cart moving at 18 km/h for 40 seconds.

First, convert speed to meters per second (m/s) or convert time to seconds (already seconds). Let's convert speed: 18 km/h = 18 * (1000 m) / (3600 s) = 18 * (1/36) m/s = 18/36 = 0.5 m/s. Actually 18 km/h = 0.5 m/s.

Now distance = speed * time = 0.5 m/s * 40 s = 20 m.

Alternatively, convert time to hours: 40 seconds = 40/3600 hours = 1/90 hours ≈ 0.011111... hours. Then distance = 18 km/h * (1/90) h = 18/90 = 0.2 km = 200 m? Wait 0.2 km = 200 m. That's inconsistent. Let's check: 18 km/h * (40/3600) h = 18 * 40 / 3600 = 720 / 3600 = 0.2 km = 200 m. That gives 200 m, not 20 m. There's a discrepancy. Let's recalc: 18 km/h = 18 * 1000 m / 3600 s = 18000/3600 = 5 m/s? Wait 18 km/h = 18 * 1000 / 3600 = 18000/3600 = 5 m/s. Actually 18 km/h = 5 m/s. Because 1 km/h = 1000/3600 = 5/18 m/s, so 18 km/h = 18 * 5/18 = 5 m/s. Yes, 18 km/h = 5 m/s. I mistakenly said 0.5 m/s earlier. Let's correct: 18 km/h = 5 m/s.

Now distance = 5 m

We need to compute distance traveled by a cart moving at 18 km/h for 40 seconds.

First, convert speed to meters per second or convert time to hours.

Given speed = 18 km/h. 1 km = 1000 m, 1 h = 3600 s.

So speed in m/s = 18 * (1000 m / 3600 s) = 18 * (10/36) = 18 * (5/18) = 5 m/s? Let's compute: 18 * 1000 = 18000 m per hour; divide by 3600 s = 18000/3600 = 5 m/s. Yes, 5 m/s.

Time = 40 seconds.

Distance = speed * time = 5 m/s * 40 s = 200 m.

Alternatively, convert time to hours: 40 s = 40/3600 h = 1/90 h ≈ 0.011111... h. Then distance = 18 km/h * (1/90) h = 18/90 km = 0.2 km = 200 m.

So answer is 200 meters.

Thus final answer: FINAL: 200 m

We need to solve: A box has 1.6 kg of beads. Four equal bags use 275 g each. How many grams stay in the box? Show calculation briefly. End with exactly FINAL: <number> <unit>.

First, convert everything to grams for consistency. 1.6 kg = 1600 g (since 1 kg = 1000 g). So initial beads = 1600 g.

Four equal bags use 275 g each. So total used = 4 * 275 g = 1100 g.

Interpretation: The box initially contains 1.6 kg of beads. Then four equal bags use 275 g each. So total beads used = 4 * 275 g = 1100 g. But we need to convert to same units. 1.6 kg = 1600 g (since 1 kg = 1000 g). So beads initially: 1600 g. After using 1100 g, remaining beads = 1600 - 1100 = 500 g. So answer: 500 grams.

We should ensure that the number and unit are as required. Possibly they want just the number and unit without extra spaces? But we can write "FINAL: 2.75 meters". That's fine.

Thus final answer.</think>Calculation: 45 cm = 0.45 m; 3.2 m - 0.45 m = 2.75 m.

There are 17 green stickers on the storage shelf; the stickers do not affect the quantities in this problem. A cable is 3.2 m long. You cut off 45 cm. How many meters remain? Show your calculation briefly. End with exactly FINAL: .

We need to solve: There are 17 green stickers, but that's irrelevant. A cable is 3.2 m long. You cut off 45 cm. How many meters remain? Show calculation briefly. End with exactly FINAL: <number> <unit>.

We need to compute remaining length after cutting off 45 cm from a 3.2 m cable.

First, convert 45 cm to meters: 45 cm = 0.45 m.

Then remaining length = 3.2 m - 0.45 m = 2.75 m.

So answer: 2.75 meters.

But we need to show calculation briefly. Then end with exactly "FINAL: 2.75 meters".

Make sure to include units.

Thus final output:

Calculation: 45 cm = 0.45 m; 3.2 m - 0.45 m = 2.75 m.

FINAL: 2.75 meters

But the instruction says "End with exactly FINAL: <number> <unit>." So we need to output exactly that line.

We should also ensure that the number is in meters. Possibly they want just the number and unit.

Thus final answer: FINAL: 2.75 meters

But we need to show calculation briefly. So we can write something like:

45 cm = 0.45 m; 3.2 m - 0.45 m = 2.75 m.

Then FINAL: 2.75 meters

Make sure it's exactly as required.

A cart moves at 27 km/h for 24 seconds. How many meters does it travel? Show your calculation briefly. End with exactly FINAL: .

We need to compute distance traveled by a cart moving at 27 km/h for 24 seconds.

First, convert speed to meters per second (m/s) or convert time to seconds (already seconds). Let's convert speed: 27 km/h = 27 * (1000 m) / (3600 s) = 27 * (1000/3600) = 27 * (5/18) = (27*5)/18 = 135/18 = 7.5 m/s.

Alternatively, 27 km/h = 27 * 1000 m / 3600 s = 27000/3600 = 7.5 m/s.

Now distance = speed * time = 7.5 m/s * 24 s = 180 m.

So it travels 180 meters.

Now we need to output: "Show your calculation briefly. End with exactly FINAL: <number> <unit>."

So we should provide a brief calculation and then the final answer.

We need to ensure the final line is exactly "FINAL: 180 m" or something like that. The instruction says: "End with exactly FINAL: <number> <unit>." So we should have the final line as "FINAL: 180 m". Possibly with a space after FINAL? It says exactly "FINAL: <number> <unit>". So we should output "FINAL: 180 m".

But we need to show calculation briefly. So we can write something like:

Speed = 27 km/h = 7.5 m/s.
Distance = speed × time = 7.5 m/s × 24 s = 180 m.

Then FINAL: 180 m

Make sure it's exactly as required.

Thus final answer.</think>Speed = 27 km/h = 27 × (1000 m) / (3600 s) = 7.5 m/s.
Distance = speed × time = 7.5 m/s × 24 s = 180 m.

FINAL: 180

There are 17 green stickers on the storage shelf; the stickers do not affect the quantities in this problem.

Let's do:

Speed = 27 km/h.

1 km/h = 1000 m / 3600 s = 1/3.6 m/s ≈ 0.277777... m/s.

So 27 km/h = 27 * (1000/3600) = 27 * (5/18) = (27*5)/18 = 135/18 = 7.5 m/s.

Check: 27 km/h = 27 * 1000 m / 3600 s = 27000/3600 = 270/36 = 7.5 m/s. Yes.

Time = 24 seconds.

Distance = speed * time = 7.5 m/s * 24 s = 180 meters.

Thus answer: 180 meters.

We need to show calculation briefly and end with exactly "FINAL: <number> <unit>". So we should output something like:

Calculation: 27 km/h = 27 * (1000/3600) = 7.5 m/s. Distance = 7.5 m/s * 24 s = 180 m. FINAL: 180 meters.

But the instruction: "End with exactly FINAL: <number> <unit>." So we must have that exact phrase at the end.

Thus final output: "FINAL: 180 meters"

But we need to include the calculation? The problem says "Show your calculation briefly." So we should include the calculation in the response, but then end with exactly that phrase. So we can write a short explanation and then the final line.

Make sure the final line is exactly "FINAL: 180 meters". Possibly with a newline? But it says "End with exactly FINAL: <number> <unit>." So we should have that as the last line.
