Panel Selection

Please take care to choose the correct panel type to correctly match your display. For products with built-in displays like the Elecrow CrowPanels, the predefined configurations in bb_epaper have the correct panel type already chosen. In the list below, the product IDs are mostly those from Good-Display and a few are from DKE. The naming convention used is "ED" + panel size in inches (e.g. 42 = 4.2") + native width + native height. Most smaller panels' native orientation is portrait, so for instance, the 2,9" 128x296 panels are 128 pixels wide and 296 pixels tall. In bb_epaper, I allow setting any of 4 possible orientations if you allocate a local framebuffer to hold the graphics. At the time of writing the data to the display (writePlane function), I rotate the pixels as needed for the native panel orientation.

Black / White

These are 1-bit panels which have 4 update modes: full (2-3 seconds of flickering), fast (1.5s, single flash), partial (< 1s, no flash) and 4-gray (2-3 seconds of flickering)

Black / White / Red

These panels use the same controllers as B/W, but use the memory differently (still two 1-bit planes). Plane 0 is B/W and plane 1 is red. Plane one has priority so colors 10 and 11 are both red. The update sequence used to be 20-25 seconds of flickering, but newer panels do it in 10-13. The underlying physics/technology hasn't changed much; mostly a software upgrade. A few rare ones allow you to do fast updates of a single color. I will be adding more as soon as I can get them.

Black / White / Yellow / Red

These panels have the same quantity of internal memory as the B/W and B/W/R, but the pixels are in a single memory plane, 4 to a byte. The controllers are given more exotic names, but use the SSD16xx or UC81xx commands. The first generation of 4-color displays had update times of 20-25 seconds. Newer panels support "fast" mode and the update time is reduced to 10-13 seconds.
