Note that this means parts of #170 are no longer needed - but I might let that PR go un-merged anyway as it should be resolved on the spyglass side and increases our data size in a way I don't want |

Resolves #171 and #161 so we can more easily move forward with spyglass.
These will likely (hopefully) be resolved on the spyglass end eventually, but this works well for now
