Resolves #171 and #161 so we can more easily move forward with spyglass.

These will likely (hopefully) be resolved on the spyglass end eventually, but this works well for now

Note that this means parts of #170 are no longer needed - but I might let that PR go un-merged anyway as it should be resolved on the spyglass side and increases our data size in a way I don't want
