On macOS 26+, the CRC daemon runs as a launchd agent in a background session that cannot access the user's login keychain. This causes pull secret storage and retrieval to fail with
CSSMERR_CSP_NO_USER_INTERACTION / errSecInteractionNotAllowed errors.

This commit works around the issue by storing the pull secret directly in the macOS login keychain from the extension process (which runs in the user's GUI session and has keychain access), then passing it to the CRC CLI via a temp file on each start:

  • crc-start-macos.ts: new module with macOS-specific start flow
    • Stores pull secret in keychain via security -i (stdin pipe to avoid exposing secrets in process arguments)
    • On start: reads from keychain -> writes temp file (0600) ->
crc start --pull-secret-file <temp> -> deletes temp file in finally block
  • crc-start.ts: delegates to macStart on macOS, commander on other platforms
  • crc-cli.ts: fix stderr log routing — only level=error and level=fatal go to logger.error(); other logrus levels (info, warning, debug) go to logger.log() to prevent false operationFailed flags in the create resource dialog

Closes #1262.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • On macOS, pull secrets are stored in the login keychain and used securely when starting CRC.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Startup now reports a running daemon as successful even if the startup command fails.
    • Improved error logging for relevant messages returned on stderr.

Walkthrough

macOS startup now stores pull secrets in the login keychain and passes them to the CRC CLI through a temporary file. Startup selects the macOS path only on macOS. The stderr logger routing also now distinguishes error-level lines from other level-tagged output.

Changes

macOS startup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Keychain-backed startup
src/crc-start-macos.ts, src/crc-start-macos.spec.ts
The new helpers store and load pull secrets through the macOS login keychain. Startup writes the secret to a mode-0600 temporary file, invokes crc start, checks daemon status, and cleans up the temporary file. Tests cover these behaviors.
Platform-specific startup wiring
src/crc-start.ts, src/crc-start.spec.ts
Startup and pull-secret storage use the macOS helpers on macOS and the existing daemon commands on other platforms. Tests cover platform selection, pull-secret handling, and startup status.

stderr logger routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
stderr level filtering
src/crc-cli.ts
execPromise routes nonblank stderr lines without a level= prefix and lines marked level=error or level=fatal to the error logger. Other stderr lines go to the normal logger.

A temp file appeared,
Then startup was steered,
And stderr found logs where it may.

Question: how does this affect users that use crc config set pull-secret-file?
Will this also cause an error since they don't have the PS saved in keychain?

Otherwise, this fix works when using PS from SSO

Good point, there should be check if pull-secret-file configuration is set. Sign in and fetching pull secret can be skipped then.
