This rule detects attempts to exploit the Astro broken access control vulnerability (CVE-2025-64525) by monitoring for suspicious values in the x-forwarded-proto HTTP header. The attack relies on injecting a full URL (e.g., http://...) into this header to manipulate backend URL construction, potentially bypassing middleware protections and enabling SSRF or other attacks.

  • The rule specifically targets the x-forwarded-proto header using the HEADERS zone and the variables field.
  • The contains match type is used to look for the substring http:// (lowercased for normalization) in the header value, as this is the key indicator of a crafted, potentially malicious value.
  • The lowercase transform ensures case-insensitive matching.
  • No match is performed on the URI, as the attack is header-based and not tied to a specific endpoint.
  • The labels and classification fields are filled according to the CVE and CWE references, and the rule is marked as an exploit with high confidence.

Validation checklist:

  • All value: fields are lowercase.
  • transform includes lowercase.
  • No match.value contains capital letters.
  • Rule uses contains instead of regex where applicable.
