Pandas is deprecating Panel

Panel is deprecated and will be removed in a future version.
The recommended way to represent these types of 3-dimensional data are with a MultiIndex on a DataFrame, via the Panel.to_frame() method
Alternatively, you can use the xarray package http://xarray.pydata.org/en/stable/.
Pandas provides a `.to_xarray()` method to help automate this conversion.

Panel can probably be changed into a dictionary of data frames. But then things like this will fail:

 mean_of_unperturbed = unperturbed_gait_cycles.mean(axis='items')

So I could introduction a custom Panel object that is a dictionary of data frames but has a few methods, like .mean().

Or I can store the data as a 3D numpy array, so that .mean() works. There is also the option of using xarray, which gives labeled ND arrays.
