Pokemon TCG Images and logos automatic downloader

This repository contains two Python scripts designed to download and process Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) data from the TCGdex API. These tools help you create a local database of card metadata, images, and set information for use in applications.

Useful to create a base dataset to work with pokemon cards images.

Overview

The repository includes two main scripts:

1. Card Downloader (card_images_and_labels_download.py) - Downloads card metadata, images, and generates labels for individual cards
2. Set Logo Downloader (set_list_collections_generation.py) - Creates organized collection data and downloads set logo images

Both scripts utilize the TCGdex API to fetch Pokemon TCG information.

Prerequisites

• Python 3.6+
• Required Python packages:
  • requests
  • tqdm
  • json (built-in)
  • os (built-in)

Card image and data downloader

The first script (card_images_and_labels_download.py) downloads detailed card metadata, card images, and generates label files for each card.

Features

• Downloads metadata for complete card sets
• Saves card images in configurable quality
• Generates structured label files for each card
• Tracks progress with progress bars
• Skips already downloaded content to avoid duplication

Usage

You can use the script in two ways:

1. Download All Sets:

   • Leave setId_to_download and setName_to_download empty
   • The script will download all available sets

2. Download Specific Set:

   • Set setId_to_download to the desired set ID
   • Set setName_to_download to the corresponding set name

You can also configure image quality by modifying:

Sets logo downloader

The second script set_list_collections_generation.py organizes sets by series and downloads set logo images.

Usage

Simply run the script without any parameters:

python set_collection_generator.py

This will:

1. Generate the collections list JSON file
2. Download all set logo images

Functions

Card Downloader

• singleSetRequest(setId, setName, metadata_dir): Downloads metadata for a specific set
• ImgDownload(setId, setName, metadata_dir): Downloads card images for a set
• generateLabels(setId, setName, metadata_dir): Creates label files for each card

Sets Logo Downloader

• set_list_collections_generation(): Creates a structured JSON of all sets organized by series
• download_sets_logo_images(json_path): Downloads logo images for all sets

Error Handling

Both scripts include basic error handling to manage:

• Connection issues
• Missing images or data
• API request failures

Notes

• The collection generator includes a TODO comment about filtering unwanted sets
• Logo images are stored with combined ID and name for unique identification
• All files are stored in a structured format for easy access in applications
